Yes, your understanding is correct. This is commonly known as the "Augusta Rule" (officially IRS Section 280A(g)). If you use your vacation home as a residence and rent it out for 14 days or fewer during the year, you do not have to report any of that rental income on your federal tax return.

you can contact Turbotax and say "billing" when asked the reason for the call but I suspect will be a waste of time, if you already applied the license key against the online version based on their offer to switch from desktop to online, and already filed, I don't think you will have much luck getting that refunded or switched back to desktop. I don't think the license key will activate the desktop s/w on a compatible computer once used for online. if your other returns don't qualify for the free version with Turbotax and it's too expensive to do the rest of the returns with Online paying for each return/account needed, you could either buy another Turbotax desktop license if you do have a compatible computer; or switch to HR Block or TaxAct for the rest of your returns that still support desktop on Win 10; or look at other cheaper online or free-file alternatives like FreeTaxUSA, see https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/browse-all-offers/ you should be able to save your .tax2025 file from the online version (under Tax Tools / Tools / Save your 2025 return to your computer), also be sure to save the PDF with all forms and worksheets for your records don't rely on these .tax files and s/w which is only supported for 4 years.

I'm using backdoor IRA for 2025 and transfer money from traditional to roth account on 4/11. Just spoke with Fidelity agent and the fund wont be available till 4/14 and the tax form might not be generated on time to file the tax. Does anyone know what is the best way to do this? Should i wait and file the extension to get all the tax form? Thanks!

You do not have to seperate your income. The IRS requests the AGI to confirm identity. If you filed jointly, you both will use the same AGI. TurboTax does a precheck before it goes to the IRS.

That didn't do anything. It told me the document was deleted, but then I checked again and it was already back. I even tried the button that clears everything and starts over. I verified that then the document was not available to delete. Once I entered my W2, it came back again. I found someone else online who suggested the W2 entry fields were broken and it worked for them after they removed the cents from their entries. I tried that too and it didn't work for me either.

You must file your 2024 and 2025 taxes separately.
Please see for 2024 "How do I file a prior year tax return?"
For your current return, you can file either Online or on the Desktop. Normally, I would say do the following:
1. file for an extension for 2025 - note that this allows you to file any time prior to October 15th. See "How do I file an IRS tax extension?"
2. do your 2024 return.
3. create your initial 2025 return based on your 2024 return (how you do this depends on what platforms you are using).
4. file your 2025 return

@user17760236673 wrote: I always have reported the income and expenses under my parents tax return That could be problematic, or at least incorrect, depending upon the type of trust created and the parties (i.e., was this a joint trust or just your father's trust, was this an IDGT, etc., lots of questions). No one here can review the terms of the trust so no one here can instruct you as to how to proceed without that information (they'll try but they could very well be wrong). At this point, based upon past procedure with you treating this as a grantor trust up until your mom passed, you might as well allocate the 2025 tax year between the January 1st through the date your mother passed and then that date through the end of the tax year (i.e., income/expenses and depreciation deduction on your mom's return until her passing, and then income/expenses on the trust return for the rest of year and a new basis (stepped up) and holding period. I have to recommend that you engage a local professional to review the terms of the trust and how you handled matters until this time. However, failing that, you could use the procedure outlined above.

Thank you. - So for example, for a mutual funds investment account, I can only share the amount invested and not the capital gains on it? - I also was wondering for life insurance accounts, how is that reported? It is not accessible money, as in I will not get a payout soon. Does that have to be reported too? If so, is it the money I will receive as a payout later or the money currently in the account for 2025.

@HeavenKnowsTrust I worked up a mock non-resident/part year resident Hawaii return in TurboTax Desktop and the manual entry of the Kiddie tax from form N-615 did get included. I looked at line 44 on N-15 before before I added the Kiddie tax in the box and the lowest box was not checked for tax from several Hawaii forms. I then added an amount to the box for the N-615 Kiddie Tax and the amount on Line 44 increased by the amount I entered in that box and the lowest box on line 44 for tax from other Hawaii forms was checked. If you delete your Hawaii return and start over, that may fix this on your screen. To do this, click the State Taxes tab, then click Continue. Then click on File and select Remove State Return from the dropdown. Highlight your Hawaii return, then click Remove, then click Yes on the pop-up to confirm deletion. If you are filing as a Hawaii non-resident, you might also need to delete your resident state return, then complete your Hawaii return and then start over on your resident state return.
@Emakrod1 I just worked up a mock Rhode Island return for a single individual and the RI-1040 shoed the correct $5,100 exemption on line 6 and the correct standard deduction of $10,900 on line 4. If you are seeing a discrepancy with the amounts on these lines, please let us know how the results you are seeing are differing from what you are expecting. If you want us to take a closer look at this, we would need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:
TurboTax Online:
Sign into your online account.
Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.
TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:
Open your return.
Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created. Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.
*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

In TurboTax, you typically claim internet and phone expenses as part of your business expenses, not under utilities. These are usually entered in the Communications section, which falls under non-driving business expenses or home office deductions depending on your filing situation. To claim these expenses in TurboTax Online: 1. Go to the Income & Expenses or Business Expenses section (if self-employed). 2. Find the category for Communications or Phone and Internet Expenses. 3. Enter the business portion of your internet and phone bills. @Taboo228
