Your standard deduction should match the IRS rules, but the amount increases if you are 65 or older. You'll get an additional deduction of $2,000 (single) or $1,600 (per spouse).   There is also an additional deduction, not included with the standard deduction. The maximum amount for this deduction is $6,000 per senior. This additional deduction for seniors is calculated automatically based on the birthday you have entered in your tax return.    Note, this deduction has income limitations.  It begins phasing out at income of $75,000 for a single filer (or $150,000 married) and is completely phased out at income of $175,000 for a single filer (or $250,000 married).    This deduction is located on Schedule 1-A Additional Deductions, Part V. The total additional deductions will be summed and appear on your 1040, line 13b.   You can check this in TurboTax Online by navigating to Tax Tools on the left of your screen, choose Tools, then View Tax Summary. On the left of the screen, select Preview my 1040, and scroll to Schedule 1-A Part V.

I am using online turbo tax.  It only allows me to uncheck the box in the description of the error.  There is no way to uncheck the box in the actual worksheet, you can only select a different box.  You also can only edit the one line regarding 50% SDA.  I have tried every single possible iteration of checking/unchecking the box above the worksheet and the boxes in the worksheet.  Nothing works.  Here is a screenshot:

Thank you so much.   Before I spend $80 on yet another TurboTax product after already paying them once for filing, I just need to add 2 1099s that I received after 2024 was accepted and finalized, can this be done by just doing it by hand, i.e., printing the forms and mailing them, or is it better to do online.

My tax return is pretty simple, just the W2s, some dividents and this short-term capital gain. We use Standard deduction and we do not qualify for any credits. The AGI increased with 4900, but the tax bracket has not changed. And even if the Social Security taxable might have slightly changed, the tax cannot exceed 100% of the gain itself.  I will do what you suggested, compare both returns line by line before and after I entered the income to see all the changes. Thank you,

Here are the rules for filing status in New Jersey (NJ) which may be helpful. NJ Filing Status: If you are married on the last day of the tax year, you and your spouse can choose to file as married, filing a joint return, or married, filing a separate return.  Joint Filing Option: If you file a joint return, both spouses are treated as residents for the entire year, which may increase the total tax liability. If your wife has little to no income from NJ you may want to consider filing separately, i.e., married but filing separately. You can check it both ways.   California (CA): The software is stating the correct information, which means you must mark your wife as a part time resident of CA. This will allow the credit for taxes paid to another state on the same income during her residency period (tax paid to New York (NY) on the same income in CA).   Your returns will take some testing to see the best way to file your state returns. New York (NY) should be a nonresident tax return for your wife.

I would encourage you to read "Income Tax Topics: Social Security, Pensions and Annuities" on the state's website.   This reveals a complicated state of affairs: you have various limits for various ages and interaction of limits for the two spouses, and the effect of premature income, and so on. That's why it would be helpful for you to read the state's article in case anything jumps out at you.   That is, this article may help explain why you are showing $0 for your pension exclusion. Suppose, for example, you have a 1099-R with an amount that shows up on line 5a on your 1040 but no amount on line 5b (i.e., not taxable). As the state's article states, only taxable pensions can be excluded in Colorado.   Conversely, if the taxpayer is under 55, no exclusion is allowed, except as a death benefit.   I think you will find that TurboTax has correctly handled the situation, but I will need to know the details about a specific circumstance in order to discuss it in more detail.   And, no, they don't let us employees in the Community play with telephones.

It depends. The IRS allows you to calculate your RMD for each of your Traditional IRAs separately, but withdraw the total from just one of them. Therefore, if the first account already satisfied your total RMD, you can enter zero for the second account's RMD, even if that 1099-R's distribution was specifically your RMD.   If the first of your 1099-Rs covers your total RMD, you can use it to satisfy reporting your full RMD as follows:   Return to your 1099-R entries by clicking Review to the right of IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) in the Federal Wages & Income Click on the pencil to the right of the 1099-R Click Continue through the entries you've made "Let's get more information about your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), enter the amount of your distribution as your RMD that was due by December 31, 2025, Continue On the next screen, "How much of this distribution applied to your December 31, 2025 RMD?", select "The entire distribution applied...", Continue When you reach, "Review your 1099-R summary, Continue (not the pencil) When you reach, "Let's go over any required minimum distributions (RMD), Continue (not the pencil) Then skip the second Form 1099-R questions about RMD by entering zero at step 4 above and just Continue through the remaining questions   Note: If you see a penalty (Form 5329 was generated) for not having taken your RMD, it is best to delete your original entries and start over to clear the penalty.   To delete your original 1099-R entries and the erroneous Form 5329 that was generated:   Go to Tax Tools on the right hand panel inside of TurboTax Click on the down arrow and scroll down to Tools Click on Tools and select Delete a form from the menu items that appear in the Tool Center Click on the trash can icon to the right of Form 1099-R and then Form 5329

If you want to amend your original return using TurboTax and you did not use TurboTax to create your original return, you would have to recreate the original return exactly as it was filed. As VolvoGirl mentions above, you would have to pay the TurboTax fees and select that you were filing by mail in order for TurboTax to generate the amended return for you.   The IRS does allow the electronic filing of a Form 1040-X using different tax software, but you must manually recreate the original return exactly how your original return was so the columns on the Form 1040-X are correct.   Once your original tax return is fully processed and you have received your refund, you can amend your return using TurboTax Online you will: Set up your TurboTax account. Prepare your original return as described above. Then at your homepage, look for "Your tax returns & documents" and select 2025. The you will select the "Amend (change) return" dropdown and in the dropdown choose "Amend using TurboTax Online". Follow your prompts, and select your reason for amending. Make your corrections. Make sure to review your return before filing and then  follow the prompts to e-file or print and mail Form 1040-X to the IRS.    The IRS has a tool to determine if you should amend your tax return that provides some valuable information  Should I file an amended return?   You will be able to track your amended return using this link  Where's My Amended Return? on IRS.gov. Click here for additional information regarding filing an amended return.   Click here for additional information about e-filing your Form 1040-X.   If you have additional information or questions regarding this, please return to Community and we would be glad to help.

I filed my taxes last year using Turbotax 2024. I have tried opening both the 2024 software and the saved document that was filed electronically last year. I have not been able to open either of these. After starting to work on my 2025 taxes with the expectation of importing last years data I get a message from Turbotax stating the 2024 data cannot be accessed due to corrupted files. I need that data for accurate tax reporting.   When I try to open either the software or tax document from 2024 Turbotax will not allow me to open them with the code shown in the form **** **** **** CRMG. I get the message "The license code you entered is not valid. Error Code 605". I found the code listed on my online account but after entering it the program doesn't open and I get the message "It's 16 characters long and came with your instructions".   I have no idea what to do to access the needed files. Thank you.
