Yes---you have self-employment income.   SELF EMPLOYMENT INCOME/“side jobs”     If you have self-employment income for which you will pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare,  you will need to use online Premium software or any version of the desktop software download so that you can prepare a Schedule C for your business expenses.     https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/self-employed/help/how-do-i-report-income-from-self-employment/00/26653   https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/self-employed/help/what-is-the-self-employment-tax/00/25922   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/import-export-data-files/enter-self-employment-business-expenses-like-home/L1k6HJY4A_US_en_US?uid=m6jrthmp

Thanks for looking into this.     Yes, I want to itemize Fed and take MD standard deduction.    I would not be surprised if there are multiple problems depending on the details of the forms.I tried lots of things until I hit on the work around.   1) Like you, I tweaked the MD Part IV override. There is also a way in the Fed inf worksheet Part VI to force Fed itemization. You could maybe make test cases by generating combinations.   2) The logic that MD and Fed must match needs to be fixed to abide by the policy in the MD 502 instructions.    3) MD now has an "itemized deduction phase out". It adds to the complexity of whether itemizing or standard deduction is better at the state level. Here is document with examples that might help create "break even" use cases : https://www.marylandcomptroller.gov/content/dam/mdcomp/tax/legal-publications/alerts/tax-alert-changes-to-standard-and-itemized-deductions-and-to-state-and-local-income-tax-rates-from-the-2025-legislative-session.pdf

Yes, the income reported on your 1099-NEC is considered taxable income.   You are required to report this income on your federal tax return, typically using Schedule C. If your total net earnings from self-employment reach $400 or more for the year, you will also be responsible for paying self-employment taxes, which cover Social Security and Medicare. However, you can reduce the amount of tax you owe by deducting business-related expenses, such as the cost of sheet music, piano tuning, or mileage driven to the performances.    Here is how to enter the 1099-NEC in TurboTax Online:   1. Navigate to Federal > Income > Wages & Income Summary 2. Locate Other Common Income and select to expand 3. Select Start (or revisit) to the right of 1099-NEC 4. Answer Yes, you got a 1099-NEC 5. Complete the interview to report the income

These are the steps that have worked for most people: Go to education expenses (NOT 1099-Q section, but the 1098-T section, even though you do not have a 1098-T) Select child, edit their school info Choose that they did attend a qualified school and enter all the info. It can be fake info since you're going to remove it in the next step. DO NOT ENTER tuition payments here- if you do, it will be doubled since the elementary tuition is entered separately on the worksheet. Edit school info again, but change their attendance to a qualified school to No. Save and check for errors again

Sorry that happened, but no one here in the user community can explain or help with it.   Are you able to set up another appointment?  Or phone TurboTax and enlist their help. IMHO, they "shouldn't" charge you if you can't even connect to your Tax Expert, but I don't work for TurboTax.   Hours are 5AM-9PM Pacific, 7 days/week https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/contact/

On my 2024 return, Line 12 has the standard deduction, $14,600.00.   Unfortunately, the discrepancy was not displayed in the software until the forms had been submitted. This was the first time it showed "Total Tax Owed" as an amount LOWER than what it said I owed when paying.   I really appreciate your assistance!   - C
