If your childrens are under 19, their student status does not matter.  If they are 19-23 you must indicate they are full time students to claim them as Qualifying Children Dependents.

Hello AmyC, I am glad to hear this, but the issue still does not seem to be fixed on my end. Is there an update to this message?

No one here can see your balance sheet and other figures, M-1, and M-2. Without which it's difficult to provide any sort of reasonable answer.

My son worked as a tutor in his college (out-of-state) and received a 1099-NEC. We are claiming him as a dependent in AZ. In addition to filing his own federal taxes, does he also have to file state taxes in his college state? Boxes 5-7 are blank in the 1099-NEC
I also am doing taxes for a minor child who qualifies for the free version, so there's no point buying the desktop version in this case.

A couple reasons it could be saying you need to upgrade…. You might be seeing Form 8959 because the amount of Medicare taxes withheld in W2 box 6 is not exactly 1.45% of the Medicare wages in box 5, due to rounding.   Try leaving the cents off of the Medicare tax on your W2 box 6.   Box 6 has to be exactly 1.45% of box 5 or less.      If it is saying you need Schedule 3 and can't use the Free Edition it might be giving you the retirement savings credit. You can say you are a student to decline the credit. You must answer Yes when asked in the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit section if your were a full-time student. The answer to this same question asked in the personal-information section is not the answer that is used.

It depends. If TurboTax Online believes you paid your fee, then you will not be allowed to clear and start over, and you don't want to. First review your tax return and if you confirm all the correct entries are there you can try to review the return. Since it indicates it's been paid you can use the link below to see your tax return to review any errors.   You have access to all forms when you choose to print your return in TurboTax Online/Mobile.  You are required to pay before printing, but do not have to file until you are ready. Can I print a copy of my return in TurboTax Online before filing? If you are using TurboTax Desktop you can switch to Forms and review all forms and worksheets.

Sorry to hear that.  Major frustration, I'm sure. Here is more detail regarding how I solved this problem: The TurboTax form was Capital Asset Sales Entry Worksheet.  Once I found that, (I had three of them) I was able to enter an X in the "No" box on the left side of the sheet.  I didn't fix the problem until I entered an N in every box on the three sheets where there was a transaction listed.   Hope this helps.  Good luck.

I am self-employed and have a sole proprietorship. I get income directly from clients and also from a charter school. The charter school sends me a 1099-NEC. Even though I entered the info in the 1099-NEC area, it shows up as zero. Then, I entered my direct cash income, and it's asking me if that is my net income. Do I enter the money from the charter school there instead? I have not had this problem in the past. So confused.   Thanks to anyone who can help me!

Hi @dmertz,   I appreciated your insight on this post and was hoping you could offer guidance in my situation.   In 2025, I began contributing to a Roth 401k and my employer also matched a portion of the contributions. I am unsure whether the employer match went into the same Roth 401k account or into a separate 401k account. I assume that the employer match went into a separate 401k account since you mentioned that few 401k plan agreements have been modified to allow employer contributions to be Roth contributions. I also left that employer in 2025 and rolled all the money (with a direct rollover) into my Roth IRA at a brokerage in 2025.   I received two 1099-R forms for 2025. Form #1 appears to show the transfer of the Roth 401k contributions to my Roth IRA. Form #1 contains an amount in box 5 for employee contributions and has code H in box 7. Form #2 appears to show the transfer of the employer match to my Roth IRA. Form #2 contains code G in box 7. Both forms have 0.00 in box 2a as the taxable amount. On both forms, box 2b is NOT checked.    If I assume that the employer match went into a separate 401k account, then I should have to pay taxes on the employer match since I rolled it to the Roth IRA in 2025 and I expected to receive a 1099-R with a taxable amount in box 2a. However, there is $0.00 taxable amount listed in box 2a on both forms. Do I need to use Form 8606 to report the conversion of the employer match to my Roth IRA even though there is $0.00 in box 2a and code G in box 7?   If I assume that the employer match went into the same Roth 401k account, then my research into SECURE 2.0 act indicates that I should still receive a 1099-R with a taxable amount in box 2a.... but I did not. Is it possible that the In-Plan Roth Rollover you mention below was performed? Or are my 1099-R forms incorrect?
I searched the web and turbotax mentions free tax service for fulltime students, yet he is being charged $89.
