@AmeliesUncle, @NCperson, @Opus 17 Thank you all for your responses (and patience). Words really matter. There is a distinction between tax liability and tax owed. TT stated owed but meant liability, correct? Based on your feedback, tax owed means that I owe the govt money because my withholding was less than what my liability was (amount you owe, line 37). In this case, if my liability was $10K and the withholding amount was $9500, I would owe $500, then I still could take advantage of the $2K tax credit and I would get a refund of $1500, correct? Additionally, I would still receive a refund for the tax credit if my liability was $10K and the withholding amount was $10.5K, I would be due $500 refund, but I still could take advantage of the $2K tax credit and I would get a refund of $2.5K, correct?.

The transaction would be entered in the Investment Income section using "Other" as the type of investment. However, at this point that section has probably not been completed programmatically.

You two are correct. It isn't fixed. I was misled into thinking it was fixed because the correct amount was shown on the Federal Carryover Worksheet and it was not shown as an override. That's interesting because you can mark entries on this worksheet as an override, but this one wasn't showing as an override.

@AKL1 for most, the capital gain is going to be 15%. How much is a 'large' capital gain and what is your income without the capital gain? this is rather easy to figure out and doesn't take a software package to estimate. you could also use this website...it is quite accurate https://www.dinkytown.net/java/1040-tax-calculator.html

Multi-member LLCs file a Form 1065 while single-member LLCs file on their individual income tax returns (1040) unless they make an election to be treated as corporations for federal income tax purposes. Therefore, unless your husband made an election, he would file income and expenses from his LLC on the appropriate schedule on his (or your joint) 1040.

Just google if ChatGPT is secure and... yah, its a bad idea. Understood, but the operative words are "can link". Clearly, it is not mandatory at this point.

My husband created a sole owner LLC, then that new entity purchased a house to use as rental property. Does the LLC file its' own tax form, like an 1120? Or is everything done on his 1040? I used to have an S-Corp, so am used to the "business" having its own tax return. Not sure how the LLC works.

Each tax year has to be filed separately using the forms for the specific tax year. They cannot be combined in any way--do not even put them in the same envelope when you mail them. Software for past years is available back to 2022. Any earlier years can only be prepared on paper forms by hand--and those refunds have been forfeited now.
Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and 2024 is permanently closed.
Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.
To file a return for a prior tax year
If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.
Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Once a tax return has been Accepted by the IRS or a State, TurboTax receives no further information concerning the tax return or the status of any tax refund.
After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.
You may want to contact a Taxpayer Advocate in your area. See this IRS website for Taxpayer Advocate - https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/ or call 1-877-777-4778

@AKL1 A couple options to try: 1) Tax Caster : TaxCaster 2025 2) Another user thinks a different Calculator works better. See the link in the reply at: Re: TaxCaster 2025 3) Those who have already used the "Desktop" version of 2024 Turbotax, they can use the "What-If" worksheet in the 2024 desktop product. They copy all their already-filed data in the 2024 column into a separate 2025 column, then change the individual entries to mimic what they currently or propose to expect for 2025. And then evaluate that result.

TurboTax users can link their Intuit accounts to ChatGPT, and take tax or financial actions in a secure fashion. ChatGPT can then guide those customers through tasks tied to their TurboTax filings or financial profile without ever accessing the underlying documents. The experience will run inside ChatGPT. As part of the partnership, users will be able to authorize Intuit to pull the right data and return tailored results, like estimating a tax refund, finding the right credit card, or generating QuickBooks insights off real-time business activity. Privacy is of particular importance when it involves financial data. A user’s information will stay inside Intuit’s ecosystem, even when accessed through ChatGPT.
