Hi, I have a TurboTax behavior question (not a tax logic question). I initially selected “Allocate wages by percentage” for my NY W-2, but later switched to the conservative approach (100% NY income under convenience rule). Now, even after selecting 100% allocation, TurboTax keeps taking me back to the “Allocate by percentage” screen when I click Edit on the W-2. However: My IT-203 worksheet shows wages correctly as 100% NY income The final numbers appear correct Questions: Is this just a UI issue, or is TurboTax still using percentage allocation internally? How can I fully reset the W-2 allocation method to “100% NY”? Do I need to delete and re-enter the W-2 to clear prior allocation choices? Thank you!

I was asked to work a sales booth for a few weekends at a fair. For this work I received a 1099NEC. I was wondering if I can deduct the mileage to go to the job site and back. Key details are I do not have a regular work location outside the home. I did handle keeping track of the mileage on my home computer and used my phone and home computer for correspondence but I do not have an exclusive office for this business located in my house. This is not very regular work either but occasionally I am asked to do this type of work. The trip was less than 50 miles. I guess it would be deemed to be within a Metropolitan area. I would say the work location is temporary since it is for three weekends only. Where I get confused is if my home is my principal place of business then it appears to be deductible. By the criteria that I have no other office nor do I do admin work anywhere else it qualifies as my principal place of business. Other previous discussions on this subject would say yes it is deductible. However other threads seem to indicate that the home utilization has to be more regular or substantial to qualify as a principal place of business. I know my office does not qualify for a home office deduction because it is not exclusive or regular but that does not seem to be the criteria for deducting mileage it just has to be the principle place of business. So is it a temporary work location? Is my home a principal place of business or not? And if not why? If both are yes then it should be deductible true?

I agree with @NCperson , we need clarification on your actual numbers; what's in boxes 1 and 5. Loan payments and out of pocket payments are not relevant. What matters is how much qualified expenses you had and how much of those expenses you allocate to the scholarship. Room & board are not qualified expenses for either tax free scholarship or a tuition credit.
Here's a post on the five main points on the 1098-T:

@j-palces IRS's rule. it expects you to pay your taxes quarterly. Review form 2210 and 2201ai for the gory math. The chart on the top of Form 2210 explains a lot. Reviewing that form and ensuring it is correct can reduce the penalty/ interest in many cases.

@DaveF1006 this info does not seem to match the 2025 Form 709 as those line numbers do not exist on that form. On your form: You must check the "Yes" box on Line 12 and enter her name. She must sign and date under the "Consent of Spouse" section on Line 18. On her form: She must check the "Yes" box on Line 12 and enter your name. You must sign and date her form on Line 18. Instead there is a Part III Spouse's Consent section, and in addition a separately prepared Notice of Consent must be prepared and attached (no specific form is provided for this notice). Thanks to everyone for the info on the confusion of how to fill out Schedule A of Form 709 when gifts are split with a spouse. The labeling and instructions for the form are most confusing.

Not really a practical solution, is it. Recompiling huge amounts of data. This is a leasing company with around 300 assets currently, and around 3,000 historically. It's hard for me to figure how TT came up with this dumb response. In addition to "simply" adding 300 assets, the history would be missing for depreciation, bonus, AMT, ACE and other fun items to recompute and input, plus the state data of the same assets with their own unique methods of depreciation, bonus, AMT and ACE. Ever try doing a California return? This is the point: I've used TT since maybe 2005? When I see many users on the internet complaning about the same problems, it might behove TT to actually talk to one of them and fix the problem.

If you think your number of e-filed returns is in error, you can contact TurboTax Support using this link: Turbo Tax customer support.
TurboTax desktop editions allow you to prepare unlimited returns but limit electronic filing (e-file) to a maximum of five federal returns per license. This five-return limit is mandated by the IRS, and once exceeded, all additional returns must be printed and filed by mail.
For TurboTax Online users you can e-file one federal return per account; multiple returns require separate accounts.
The limit of 5 e-filed returns may be triggered by any rejected returns that were resubmitted; or multiple installations on different computers can sometimes trigger this prematurely. An amended return may also count toward your e-file limit.
You can check this by reviewing your e-file history in TurboTax Desktop by going to File, Electronic Filing, Show Electronic Filing Status History to see which returns were counted as e-filed.
Additional returns may have to be printed and mailed, or you can purchase a new license.Keep in mind however, the IRS limits you to five e-filed returns per email address, user, and computer IP address. This limit is addressed in IRS Publication 1345.
Please return to Community if you have any additional information or questions and we would be happy to help.

I need some help. I am using Turbo Tax Deluxe. I am able to complete 3 returns with the program I purchased. I am keying in a friends return. The AGI is $29519 federal Tax showing in Turbo Tax is owed $16213. The taxable percentage according to the IRS is 12%. So 12% of the AGI of $29519 is $3542.28. Turbo tax Deluxe is wrong. How come it is showing that the Federal income tax showing owed is $16213, when the 12% is only $3542.28? I will not submit the return as it stands. Please review and advise.
Sincerely
Sandra

That means that Form 3115 and §481(a) Adjustments do NOT apply. The errors are corrected by amending the years that had the error.

Yes, it sounds like you added the 1099-R, but may need to revisit the entry to answer al the interview questions that come after entering the data. Here are the steps to indicate the rollover in TurboTax Online:
Navigate to Federal >Income > Wages & Income Summary > Retirement Plans and Social Security > IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R) Start/Revisit
Indicate you received a 1099-R and choose to enter a different way on the import screen to manually enter
Enter the information from the 1099-R, continue through the interview questions.
You will come to a screen that says "Tell us if you moved the money through a rollover or conversion." Select "I rolled over some or all of it to an IRA or other retirement account within the time limits (normally 60 days)"
On the next screen, indicate you rolled over the entire amount to another retirement account.
