@bwu513 sorry for your loss. in 2025, she was liable for the RMD. If she did not take it, then you are responsible to take it. for 2026, the RMD is based on a) the balance of the Inherited IRA as of 12.31.25 and b) an IRS table which is based on YOUR age. Best to consult with the Administrator of the IRA to determine the 2026 RMD and whether your grandmother took her 2025 RMD. Also, as an inherited IRA, you must liquidate the IRA within 10 years, so taking just the RMD will leave you with quite the lump to distribute in 2035.

If you did not itemize your deductions on the 2022 federal tax return then you do not need to report the CA state tax refund on your 2025 federal tax return.

@Titan36 The IRS does not require you to enter a drivers license to e-file your federal tax return, so if entering your DL is too confusing, just skip that screen, and move on in the software.

@ olivia-david Online TurboTax saves your return after each screen. You can come and go. The best way to exit is to go to the left menu column, and scroll down to Sign Out. Even if you were to close the browser, your return should be saved. NOTE: When you come back, when you go to the Tax Home, your return interview may be closed. To open it back up and get back to the interview, at the Tax Home look for a link "Add a State." That doesn't really add one, but will open the interview back up so you can go back to the FILE section.

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.
If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
Sometimes—not always— the IRS corrects your mistakes, while they are processing your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.
Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

You prepared a personal tax return without including your Schedule C --- using some other tax software? And now you want to just add the Schedule C? Sorry---you cannot do it that way, not even with "expert" help. Your original Form 1040 has to be amended.
CAN I USE TURBOTAX TO AMEND IF THE RETURN WAS PREPARED SOMEWHERE ELSE?
If you did not use TurboTax to prepare your tax return, it is possible to amend the return using TurboTax but it will really be a pain. It would be better to use the software or service used to file originally. If a paid preparer made a mistake on your tax return, that tax preparer should do the amended return for you at no charge.
In order to use TurboTax to amend your return, you need to purchase the desktop software for the tax year and re-create the return EXACTLY as it appeared when it was filed with the IRS/states. Every line has to be the same. Then you have to "trick" the software into thinking you filed by saying you will mail the return. (but do not mail it) AFTER that, you use the software to prepare a Form 1040X, which has to be printed, signed and mailed to the IRS. It takes the IRS about 4-6 months to process an amended return

I was able to go to the form in the Fed section and delete the Underpayment penalty. But when I went to the California State and said I wanted the govt to calculate my penalty, it still said it would include the penalty on my amount owed. (It was $20.00). I ended up clicking through all the buttons, and it finally said, If you are 62 or older and retired, you can waive the penalty. I wrote I was retired and wanted to waive the $20 penalty. So I got it to reduce my "penalty" and just pay the amount I owed without it. Thanks for your advice!
