The HSA is your HSA, it is incumbent on you to learn how to withdraw money from the HSA as needed. Note that when you go to the HSA's website, there is likely a form that allows you to withdraw excess contributions. Note that this phrase is important because you don't want the HSA custodian to think that this is a normal distribution.   When the HSA custodian accepts your request, then they will send you a check for the amount of the withdrawal (plus any earnings, if they do that). In addition, they will send you a form 1099-SA sometime between now and January 2027. Why so long? Because this form needs to be entered on your 2026 tax return, which you will do in early 2027.

USER ERROR WITH SOCIAL SECURITY ENTRY We have seen a lot of people who made a user error with the entry of their SSA1099.   The screen right after you enter the SSA1099 asks you if you lived in certain foreign countries in 2025.   If you skipped past that screen or answered incorrectly, your Social Security was not taxed correctly.   Look at your Form 1040 and see if line 6b was left blank due to that mistake.  The IRS is catching those mistakes and correcting them by reducing your refund or increasing your tax due.   It is really so important to read every screen slowly and carefully from top to bottom as you prepare your tax return to avoid errors.
You can now check the checkbox,  It is in the Federal Review section.

What happened when you got the prompt about the $515, did you go through the Other Tax Situations / Underpayment Penalty section and opt for the IRS to bill you later (see example below)   Either way, the outcome is IRS calculated it for you which is a valid option, it doesn't need to be on your 1040 and you will not be penalized as long as pay the IRS by the date in the letter.   From 1040 instructions: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf   Because Form 2210 is complicated, you can leave line 38 blank and the IRS will figure the penalty and send you a bill. We won’t charge you interest on the penalty if you pay by the date specified on the bill.
If you can't sign in at all, you can go to the Intuit Account Recovery page. This requires you to upload a photo of a government-issued ID to verify your identity.

Reporting this in TurboTax without a 1099 form is straightforward. You will report it as "Other Self-Employed Income" (also called "General Income" or "Cash/Check Income"). This bypasses the need for the company's EIN or a formal tax form.   Step-by-Step Instructions Open your return and go to the Federal taxes section.  Click on Wages & Income. Scroll down to Self-Employment (or "Income from a Business") and click Start or Update next to Self-employment income and expenses. Set up your "Business": If you haven’t already, TurboTax will ask for a description of your work. Enter something like "IT Consulting" or "IT Contractor." When asked for a business name, if you don't have a formal LLC, just use your own name. When asked for an EIN, leave it blank (it will default to your Social Security Number). You will reach a screen titled "Let's enter the income for your [IT Consulting] work." Do NOT select "1099-NEC." Instead, select "Other self-employed income" (sometimes labeled as "Additional income" or "Cash, check, and other income"). Click Continue. On the next screen, enter the total amount you were paid for the year in the "Other income" box. You can describe it as "Contractor Pay" or "IT Services."  Add Your Expenses:   TurboTax will then guide you through the Expenses section. This is where you enter your home office, internet, or equipment costs to lower the amount of tax you owe on that income.

Check the My Info section in the left menu under Federal in TurboTax Online. Make sure that you show South Carolina as your state of residence at the end of 2025. Also check the box that you lived in another state in 2025. You will select North Carolina and enter the date you moved to SC.   If that does not fix the issue, you can go into each state's organizer by going to State from the left menu and clicking on Edit or Continue. Here you can check the residency status, dates and other information related to your part-year tax returns.

A vehicle for personal use is not a deductible expense.  You cannot depreciate it or take a deduction for it.  If however, it was a new car with a loan in 2025, then you may be able to claim a Car Loan Interest Deduction which could lower your taxable income, if you qualify and the vehicle qualifies.    In order to claim this interest the following criteria must be met: The car was purchased not leased Final assembly occurred in the US It is NOT a business use, but was purchased for personal use It has a GVWR of less than 14,000lbs (car, truck, SUV, mini van or motorcycle) Loan was originated in 2025 and must be secured by a lien on the vehicle or the title Your income must be less than $100,000 if single or $200,000 if married filing jointly to receive the full deduction.   If your income is over $150,000 if single or $250,000 if Married filing jointly, you are not eligible Note:  The interest deduction is capped at $10,000.  This is an above the line deduction, not a credit meaning it will lower your AGI and taxable income.  It will not be an amount that is refunded to you, but it could result in a refund by lowering your taxable income.     You can enter your car loan interest by selecting the following: Deductions and credits Cars and Other things you own Start next to Car Loan Interest You will need to enter the VIN and information from the lender

Sounds like something got stuck. You can try these things:   Log Out Completely: Before doing anything else, click Sign Out in the TurboTax menu. Clear Cache and Cookies: This removes old, "corrupted" data that might be confusing the website. Use an Incognito (Private) Window: This is the most effective "quick fix" because it launches the browser without any saved history or extensions (like AdBlockers) that often interfere with tax forms. Check Pop-up Blockers: TurboTax often opens forms (like the 1099 PDF) or payment windows in a separate pop-up. Look at the right side of your address bar for a small icon with a "red X"—click it and select "Always allow pop-ups from Intuit." Restart the Browser: Close all open windows of your browser entirely and then reopen it.   Most TurboTax errors happen because the browser is trying to use an old "session" from a previous visit. By clearing the cache or using Incognito mode, you force the browser to establish a brand-new, secure connection with the Intuit servers.

If TurboTax shows a refund but says you haven't finished, your return might be pending or need a final review. If you have not paid or you did not hit the button to transmit your returns, than you have not finished the process. See: How do I e-file my tax return?   Also, to know if you filed your TurboTax tax return, check your email for a confirmation from TurboTax or log into your TurboTax Tax Home to see if the status says "Accepted" or "Pending". If it does, than you have filed your tax return. If "accepted," the IRS has it. If it is  "rejected," you must fix the errors and refile your return.   You can use the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool to get the most up to date status of your refund. You will need your Social Security number and exact refund amount.   See Also:   How to Check Your Tax Refund Status Please return To Community if you have any additional information or questions and we would be happy to help.

It depends. You can change your answers in the 1099-MISC entry and the income category in your case will not change the tax results.    It's important that you made the appropriate selections so that TurboTax does know that it was not self employment income. Open your TurboTax Online/Mobile or TurboTax Desktop tax return Search (upper right) > type 1099misc > click the Jump to... link Begin your entry of the 1099-MISC. It's important for you to select 'None of these apply" and then you should also select the following: 'No' on the screen 'Did the '____' involve work that's like your main job?' 'No' on the screen 'Did the '____'  involve an intent to earn money?' This will report the income without any business/self employment activity and it will show up on Form 1040, Line 8 (From Schedule 1, Line 8z). Continue to complete this section.

Everyone's tax situation is different and the complexity of your tax situation, meaning the forms needed to file your return, determines if you qualify for the TurboTax Free Edition.   The TurboTax Free Edition is strictly limited to simple Form 1040 returns. If your return requires additional schedules to report specific types of income or to claim certain credits, the system will prompt you to upgrade to TurboTax Deluxe or higher.   Here are the most common reasons you would be required to upgrade to a paid version: Unemployment Income: If you received a 1099-G for unemployment benefits, this is no longer covered under the Free Edition for the 2025 tax year. Itemized Deductions: If you are claiming deductions for mortgage interest, property taxes, or large charitable contributions on Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Investment Income: Reporting stock sales, cryptocurrency transactions, or rental property income. Self-Employment/Gig Work: If you have 1099-NEC or 1099-K income and need to deduct business expenses on Schedule C. Education Credits: Claiming the American Opportunity Tax Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit (Form 8863). To see if you have forms that are not included in the free edition: Sign in to your TurboTax Online account. Select Tax Tools from the left menu and then click Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Look for Schedules 1, 2, or 3. If any of these are present (other than for the Student Loan Interest deduction or the EITC/Child Tax Credit), an upgrade is required. If you want to start over to remove an accidental entry:  Select Tax Tools  Clear and Start Over  This will erase all data entered so far

No.  It does not matter.  Both are taxed the same.  In reality, line 4 is for IRA's and line 5 is for pensions and 401ks.     However, if this is being treated as a pension instead of an 401k Settlement the most likely reason is because of how you answered the questions that followed your 1099-R entries.  If you answered yes to was this a periodic payment or that you received it monthly, it would be treated as a pension.     To fix this, you can go back through the questions after the 1099-R and double check your answers being sure to say no, you did not receive this monthly or as a periodic payment.
Report these under one country and use "various" or "RIC" as the country. The IRS allows this type of consolidation without reporting each individual country.

Thank you for the info!!  I am still unsure if an explanation is required and how to explain electronically.   The loss was in our taxable brokerage account.   The wash was created by a purchase in my Roth account.   So... Two different accounts (at the same brokerage) were involved in the wash.  The brokerage was not aware of the wash and DID NOT  document the wash on our 1099.   I have documented the wash against the sale in our taxable account (as you appear to suggest, in the Capital Asset Sales Worksheet).   So, my 8949 DOES NOT match the 1099 received... by the amount of the wash.   Will this alone create problem with the IRS?  Do I need to somehow explain?  If so, how do I do that electronically in TT?   Thank you!!
