Yes, he has to be living outside of the US or Puerto Rico in order to qualify. In other words, if he were just out of the US - on vacation - and got delayed returning home, that would not suffice for the extension. A retirees tax home is where their residence is. The automatic extension applies if you live or work abroad.

Alabama does not tax Social Security benefits, public pensions (military, federal, state, local), or private defined-benefit pensions. For years 2025 through 2028, individuals 65 and older can exempt an additional $6,000 of retirement income such as distributions from a 401(k) or an IRA. So if married filing joint potentially up to $12,000 ($6,000 each) of other retirement income.

Clicking the Form 1116 option on the federal information worksheet did not generate Form 1116 in the PDF. There is no Foreign Tax credit for this year but Foreign Tax carryover for 2025 and carryovers from previous years. How can I force Turbotax to generate Form 1116 ? Thank you. R

My 1099 from a broker has too many transactions to complete with Desktop Deluxe. I can still efile with inputting the "section totals," but then need to separately mail the 1099 to the IRS along with Form 8453. Printing and mailing a 400 page document is a big task. I then found out that TT Online allows me to upload the pdf from the broker and TT will include it with the efile transmittal. Is my understanding correct? I also read that upgrading to Desktop Premier might allow the same procedure as TT Online. TT Online is surprisingly expensive...particularly when considering wasting the desktop version and all its hours of work. (TT Online will not allow the transfer of current year data, only prior). If this is the only solution, I will use TT Online, because I really want to avoid the expense and time of printing and sending registered mail.

where is the excess coming from?
your w-2 should ony reflect social security taxes based on that compensation
any compensation received for the in-home care for your parents would normally not be subject to these withholding taxes. so please clarify your situation
schedule 3 line 11 is for excess tier 1 social security withheld under the Railroad Retirement Tax Act.

Yes. A U.S. citizen or resident married to a dual-status or nonresident alien can file a joint return by electing to treat the non-resident/dual status spouse as a U.S. resident for the entire tax year. You will need to:
Attach a statement to your tax return, signed by both spouses, that states that one spouse is a nonresident or dual status alien and the other is a U.S. citizen or resident alien, and you are choosing to both be treated as US residents for the tax year.
List the name, address and Social Security number (or Individual Taxpayer Identification number) of each spouse.
Be sure to sign the statement!

The 1099-R form says 'amount taxable = 0" in box 2. But TTax is still adding it as income.

The screenshot I posted above comes up right after you enter the SS income. It's the very next screen.

Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities. There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.
TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer. “21 days” is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.
First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:
https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/
Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.
You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 35a of your 2025 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:
https://www.irs.gov/refunds
To track your state refund:
https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_US_en_US?uid=lt447ebr
If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing
https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/refunds-take-longer-others/L14YlqFrH_US_en_US?uid=lexdr7zh
.
https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/irs-refund-taking-longer-21-days/L2vRAJbdU_US_en_US?uid=lexe7lst
If you are getting earned income credit on line 27 or additional child tax credit on line 28 You are subject to the delay required by the PATH act. Do not expect your refund before early March
https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/internal-revenue-service/federal-refunds-delayed-due-path-act/L5jnQJsBi_US_en_US
Note: “Accepted” is not the same as “approved”. TurboTax tells you the e-file was accepted if the IRS deems that there is enough information on the return for them to take it in for processing. Only the IRS can approve of the refund, which is a later stage of processing. If the IRS approves your refund they will provide a date for the refund to be issued.
FROM THE IRS WHERE’S MY REFUND SITE:
https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund
How it works
Where's My Refund shows your refund status:
Return Received – We received your return and are processing it.
Refund Approved – We approved your refund and are preparing to issue it by the date shown.
Refund Sent – We sent the refund to your bank or to you in the mail. It may take 5 days for it to show in your bank account or several weeks for your check to arrive in the mail.

Will you be getting a 1099R for it? Or a Trust K-1? If it's all taxable it will be taxed as ordinary income at your regular rate and that much will push you into a higher tax bracket. Will they take withholding out of it? If not, or even if they do I would send in some estimated payments so you don't owe too much on your tax return and don't get hit with a IRS penalty.

You will likely be taxed at your ordinary income tax rate, just as if you had earned that $50,000 at a job. What are the federal tax rates for 2025?

It's now 2026 and this problem still exists. I just filed my Taxes using the Turbotax for 2025 filing season. The IRS has informed me that I owe additional tax. So, this issue still has not been fixed!!!! It should default the other way. I am sure that 99%+ customers live inside the US TurboTax determined none of my SS income was taxable. ( Reason it defaulted to my living out of the country) I never saw this question.

Likewise between 2nd Jul'25 - 31st Dec'25 I don't have any income in Canada. So while filing my tax return in Canada, assume I don't have to declare any income in US. It's bit overwhelming as I have different views from multiple sources.
