Sorry for your loss.   If the property was titled in your mom's name and being reported on her individual income tax return and then was transferred upon her passing, you would prorate income and expenses for the 2025 tax year BUT the property would have a new (stepped up basis) and the depreciation would start over with that new basis and a new holding period.

If you are filing as Married Filing Separately you are not eligible for the deduction.  If you are Single and your AGI is over $175,000 or Married Filing Jointly and your AGI is over $250,000 you are not eligible for the deduction.   If you are age 65 or older and meet the requirement, the additional deduction is automatically added on your federal tax return.   Standard deductions for 2025 Single - $15.750 add $2,000 if age 65 or older Married Filing Separately - $15,750 add $1,600 if age 65 or older Married Filing Jointly - $31,500 add $1,600 for each spouse age 65 or older Head of Household - $23,625 add $2,000 if age 65 or older   New Bonus Standard Deduction (OBBB): An additional $6,000 deduction for taxpayers 65 and older. Like the OP, I was a full time resident of VA; my spouse was a part time resident, and I entered the date she became a resident. Notably, the Virginia Dept of Tax states, "If you are a full-year resident and your spouse is a part-year resident, you can file a joint return on Form 760PY." So I completed the Federal interview with a filing status of Married Filing Jointly. When I start the interview for Virginia, I am presented with only two options: married filing a combined separate return married filing a joint return Each of the above options forces me to enter a start date for myself as well as my spouse. If I enter Jan 1 of this year, I am asked what my prior state was. I have yet to figure out the way forward, apart from restarting the Federal interview with filing status of Married Filing Separately, which is to my disadvantage.     [2025 TurboTax Desktop Deluxe 25.0000.0290]
