The whole purpose of purchasing TurboTax is for it to fill in the values and print the proper forms. If I download the form from the state, it still has to be filled in by manual calculations. The state program feature also has problems, as when it asked if I qualified for elder credits, it queried if I was a resident of more than 9 months , click yes or no. It did not have the an no box, there was no way to correct the response. After using TurboTax to mail in to file the state return, as flowing the steps laid out. I got a response from the department of revenue that the forms were missing. If I have to manually download and manually calculate values, what is the purpose of even using TurbotTax?

If I sold a home in March 2023 and used claimed the exclusion of gain on my 2023 income taxes (filed April 2024) when can I claim the exclusion again? Is it 2 years between sale dates (i.e. home 1 sold March 1st 2023 so could use again for home 2 sale starting March 2nd 2025)? Or is ir 2 years between claiming the exclusion and selling the 2nd home (i.e. claimed for home 1 on 2023 taxes filed April 1st 2024 so could use again for home 2 sale starting April 2nd 2026)?

That final screen in the TaxCaster tax calculator is very confusing. There is no place for IRA withdrawals and Social Security income under "What you told us," so they are not shown there. The IRA distributions that you entered, and the taxable portion of the Social Security benefits, are included in the total income under "Refund summary."

Hi @dmoe54, the solar tax credit is "non-refundable." That means if you have no tax liability, the credit, unfortunately, does you no good. Only a small number of tax credits are refundable, and the solar credit is not one of them. The Solar Tax credit can only reduce tax that you owe.
However, could you clarify your situation? I am not understanding it all. You say you have no taxable income but that you take an RMD (from an IRA or employer retirement plan) and pay tax. Why would you pay tax if you have no taxable income?
Do you mean that you have tax withheld from the RMD distribution? Or that you pay an estimated tax payment when you get the cash? In either case, the Solar Tax credit is not affected because the non-refundable nature of the credit is not all about tax that you paid, but rather your tax liability. Tax withheld (or paid on a 1040-ES) is just an estimate of your taxes. It might be high or low. You might get a refund or you might owe tax when you file your 1040. The bottom line, though, is that if you have no taxable income, you won't have any tax liability to reduce by the solar tax credit. Sorry.

Since the recent update for the 2025 tax year when I put in my information into the Tax Calculator tool the IRA withdrawals and Social Security income that I entered are $0 in the “What you told us” Retirement section. Although, they do affect the refund/owed estimate. Investment income did show up as expected. I remember this working earlier this year. Am I missing something?

I have no taxable income. I do have investments with Schwab. I usually pay my tax when I withdraw my RMD. If If I don't pay the tax, will my Solar Tax Credit be used?

Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities. There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.
TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer. “21 days” is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.
First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:
https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/
Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.
You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 35a of your 2024 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:
https://www.irs.gov/refunds
To track your state refund:
https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_US_en_US?uid=lt447ebr
If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing

@Mrh11309 I would not confuse 'estate tax' from 'inheritance tax'. Just because it isn't part of the estate (e.g. IRAs) does not mean it is not inherited. In PA basically everything you inherited is subject to that 4.5% tax. Here is a good article that explains what can be excluded. https://www.paelderlaw.net/assets-not-subject-to-pennsylvania-inheritance-tax/

@bellasmom167 The IRS sets the rules and have ruled differently. Further, in 2025, components eligible for the tax credit must have a Product Identification Number (PIN) or Qualified Manufacturer (QM) Code to be eligible for the tax credit. did the manufacturer provide that to you?

Your 2025 W-2 will be issued by your employer by the end of January 2026. If you are asking for a copy of a W-2 that you used when you prepared your 2024 return, TT cannot send it to you.
W-2's come from employers. There is not a federal or national website that provides W-2’s.
TurboTax does not have a copy of your W-2—the Wage & Tax Statement—issued to you by your employer, (nor does TurboTax have copies of your 1099’s). Whether you entered your W-2 by keying it in yourself, importing from a payroll site or by snapping a photo using the mobile app—-TT does not have a copy of your W-2. If you saved a pdf of your completed tax return, the worksheets will show the W-2 information you entered, but not the actual W-2.
You should always save those documents for your own records. You could ask the employer(s) for copies or you can get a copy from Social Security (for a fee of $62).
To get a copy of a W-2 from Social Security https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-02501
https://www.irs.gov/help-resources/tools-faqs/faqs-for-individuals/frequently-asked-tax-questions-answers/irs-procedures/transcript-or-copy-of-form-w-2/transcript-or-copy-of-form-w-2
You can get a wage and income transcript from the IRS: It will not show the actual W-2, 1099’s, etc, but will show the income information the IRS received. It will not, however, show your state information. It will only show the federal information.
https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript
Or you can pay the IRS $30 for an actual copy of your tax return which will include copies of your W-2’s

OK......So it does appear your tax file was accepted. The next question is...exactly what do you mean by: "IRS doesn't acknowledge a 2023 tax year TurboTax filing.... ______ What acknowledgement are you referring to? Did they send you a letter saying 1) That you didn't file taxes for 2023? or perhaps 2) That you didn't actually pay the final balance of your taxes due that year? 3) or something else? ___________________ Certainly, if you click on the link to download a PDF of that year's tax file, that PDF will have a form in it "Electronic Postmark Report" down in the list of IRS forms (you might have to hunt thru the forms, but it's after the Filing Instructions and U.S. Averages)

Well this certainly gives me the impression it was accepted by state and federal governments: Confirmation emails: https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/ This just shows me a login page no matter ho many times I login and revisit the page. Do I need to have a current TurboTax product to view this tool? I'm finding it very challenging to get anything done in here without having a current subscription.
