You will not be able to merge two previous TT account to start your new joint return. You can transfer ONE of your 2024 returns into a new return, so choose the most complicated one. The other spouse’s information needs to be entered manually. The first name you enter will be the “primary” taxpayer——and in subsequent years you need to keep the names in that order—do not try to change the order of the names.
When you enter the primary spouse’s information in My Info, you have to answer the question "Were you married?" If you click the button for Married, then a drop down will appear that asks, "Do you want to file this return together with your spouse?" Then you choose YES to file a joint return. You enter your spouse's information into My Info. Whenever you are entering income information there should then be a spot for you and for your spouse's income information. WATCH for the names as you enter income on the screens. Or when you click to add income it will prompt you to choose which spouse had the income.
When you prepare a joint return you include all the information for both spouses on the SAME tax return. Include all of your personal information, all of your income from every source, all dependents (if any), all credits and deductions for both of you. You get ONE refund with both names on it.
And…keep a record of how to access the “old” account for your spouse in case a need comes up to print it or find information from it. TT will save it online for seven years,

Either version will work for you. The Home and Business has everything the Premier version has plus more on demand help screens. Home and Business is the most comprehensive product available and it will handle rental property activity. Premier will handle his self-employment taxes but will have less help screens along the way. But either product will handle both of your situations. Is it better for a married couple to file jointly or separately? (Jointly is almost always better;)

Response does not work. I apologize, should have stated “… when using TurboTax DIY Free Edition.” On my initial attempt to enter the transaction manually, or upload the 1099-R, the results are the same: the process pushes the income to the 1040 Schedule 1, thus requiring an expensive upgrade to TurboTax in order to process this transaction. On my 4th(?) attempt, deleting documents and entries, then reloading, the result is the same: a Schedule 1 display of the income, and requirement for TurboTax upgrade to process this transaction

Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities, There is no rule as to which one will come first or how much time there will be between their arrivals. Some states process returns quickly and some are very slow.

PK, In my frustration with TurboTax, I did not clarify the intent of my message was twofold. First, recognizing that time is a precious commodity I was trying to advise everyone that I would not want them to waste their time trying to work an issue that to me is clearly a programming error because of my background. Second, I wanted to advise anyone with foreign tax credits in their return should be skeptical before filing their return because incorrect credits will cause them to overpay their taxes. I appreciate that you took time to try and resolve my issue, and to the extent my response came across as ungrateful, I am embarrassed about that and apologize to you. I imported all my 1099 information directly into TurboTax from my brokerage. I verified everything was imported accurately, including all the gross income items for the foreign tax credit. When I ran the federal return review I had a single diagnostic. That diagnostic required me to check a single box for the 1099-MISC line 3 amount that was imported from my brokerage. After I checked the appropriate box ("Other Income") to address the diagnostic (i.e., increasing my income), the TurboTax computed "gross income" declined by 80% and based on my return that involves a large dollar decrease in gross income and reduced my foreign tax credit by in excess of 40%. I am deeply frustrated that after waiting 90 minutes on the phone to contact TurboTax I was cut off with no response. I am unaware of how to directly communicate to TurboTax that is impossible to have an approximately $1,500 increase in income by checking a diagnostic box decrease gross income by more than 80%. As a result, trying to replicate that inconsistent and erroneous computation seemed like a waste of time that only someone who can look at the code for the program could resolve. Accordingly, I apologize to you. My frustration and anger with TurboTax and their poor QC remains.

I suppose it's possible that TurboTax could have made the same error for other types of plan rollovers, but I didn't test those. I'm only aware of TurboTax mistakenly marking the wrong box in response to entering a code-H From 1099-R that reports a rollover from a designated Roth account in an employer plan to a Roth IRA. I saw several users posting about this rejection and all of them had entered code-H Forms 1099-R. The rejection was because it's nonsensical to mark the Rollover box on line 4c to indicate that an IRA distribution was rolled over when there was no corresponding distribution present on line 4a; you can't have am IRA rollover if there was no IRA distribution. Of course the system making the rejection has no way to know that the error was the result of marking the box on the wrong line, it can only tell that there was something nonsensical about the information on line 4a/b/c. Any type of rollover that produced the same TurboTax error would have resulted in the same rejection.

Did you e-file your tax return and was it accepted? Only the IRS and your State control when and if a Federal or State tax refund is Approved and Issued.
You complete your tax return by finishing all 3 Steps in the File section. In Step 3, to e-file your tax return, you must click on the large button labeled "Transmit my returns now".
After completing the File section and e-filing your tax return you will receive two emails from TurboTax. The first email when your tax return was transmitted and the second email when the tax return has either been accepted or rejected.
Note - Once a tax return has been Accepted by the IRS or a State, TurboTax receives no further information concerning the tax return or the status of any tax refund. Only the taxpayer listed on the tax return can obtain the status of a tax refund or a tax return.
To check the status of an e-filed return, open up your desktop product or log into your TurboTax Online Account. You can find your status within the TurboTax product. If accepted by the IRS use the federal tax refund website to check the refund status - https://www.irs.gov/refunds
If accepted by the state use this TurboTax support FAQ to check the state tax refund status - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_...
After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.

The most effective way to break this loop while keeping your vouchers is to "trick" the system into seeing a non-zero value for the 3rd or 4th quarter (which are likely the ones with balances).
Go to the NYS Estimated Tax Section: Go to State Taxes > Estimated Tax Payments.
Edit the Payments: Locate the quarters where you actually owe money (likely Q3 or Q4).
Schedule a $1 Payment: Temporarily "Schedule" a payment of $1 for the final quarter.
The Result: This satisfies the software's logic that a "scheduled payment" must have a value. The e-file blocker will disappear.
Post-Filing: Once you are accepted, you can simply ignore the $1 voucher and pay your actual calculated amount on the NYS website as you intended.
The "Safe" Alternative (Manual Printing)
If the $1 trick does not feel right, there is a way to get your vouchers without triggering the e-file error at all:
Switch to Forms Mode: (Icon in top right).
Find the NY IT-2105-V: Look for the IT-2105-V (Voucher) forms in the left-hand list.
Print Locally: Select each voucher individually. once it appears in the right pane of your screen, select Print at the bottom left of each form..
Now go back to step-by-step and go the NYS return, and Go to the NYS Estimated Tax section and select "No, I do not want to set up estimated payments." This will clear the e-file block.
Finish e-File: Since the "Estimated Payment" section is technically "off" in the interview, the e-file will proceed smoothly. You now have your vouchers safely on your desk and a successfully filed return.

The worksheet may be useful for you, but TurboTax does not count any Qualified Expenses towards the taxability of a 529 distribution; only those expenses that qualify for an Education Credit. I agree that if in the 1099-Q section, there was one question asking if any of the distribution was used for 'non-qualified expenses' and how much, that would be useful for many taxpayers.
