You have to continue in the interview until you see the "Let's see if we can lower your tax bill screen."
The next screen will say Tell us which person may have qualified for a penalty exception- you can click the pencil by your name.
Next you will see Identify the Plan
Finally, you will see "These situations may lower your tax bill" where you can enter the amount for Higher Education Expenses.
TurboTax will create the 5329 to file with your tax return and waive the 10% penalty.
To qualify for the early IRA distribution penalty waiver for higher education, you must meet specific requirements regarding the student, the institution, and the types of expenses paid in 2025. See Exceptions to tax on early distributions.

Yes, you can use the manual subtraction function, labeled "Other Subtractions" on the screen Here's the income that Connecticut handles differently. You must provide a brief description, such as "Exclusion of gain from sale of residence by person 65 or older" and only include the gain in excess of $500,000.

How you would amend or if you have to amend would depend on what was changed using Form W-2C. If you received a Form W2-C and you need to amend your tax return, you can use the steps listed below. Some corrected W-2 items do not require an amended return if they do not change your federal income tax, AGI, or total tax liability. These items can include the following: Some items in Box 14 that are changed do not require an amended return because they do not affect your tax liability; Changes made only to Social Security/Medicare wages do not need require an amended tax return; Name changes or other minor changes that do not affect your tax liability do not require an amended return. If you are unsure whether your changes require an amendment, you can come back and provide more details and we can help you further. If you have to amend your tax return first, you must wait until your original tax return is fully processed and you have received your refund before preparing and e-filing your amended tax return. When amending for a corrected Form W-2 you will only change the numbers that were changed from your original W-2. You can compare the two to see the items that changed. Once your tax return is fully processed, to amend your return using TurboTax Online you will: Log in to your TurboTax account. At your homepage, look for "Your tax returns & documents" and select the correct tax year. The you will select the "Amend (change) return" dropdown and in the dropdown choose "Amend using TurboTax Online". Follow your prompts, and select your reason for amending Make your corrections You will be able to track your amended return using this link Where's My Amended Return? on IRS.gov. Click here for additional information regarding filing an amended return Please return to Community if you have any additional information or questions and we would be happy to help.

It says "needs review" whether or not I take out the zero in box 5 and whether or not I leave box 6 "state" and box 6 "state number" blank. If this is a 1099-NEC, and if there was no state tax withheld, you can leave the three Boxes 5, 6, and 7 blank.

@AmyC: I'm getting a little concerned that I won't be able to file my Georgia return on time, solely because of these errors. I've identified that they're off by $8126 of the Georgia total, but I can't see anywhere to force this into the calculations so that TT will see a correct total and let me file. For the past few years, Georgia has always corrected my TT-filed return (in my favor), so I've been trying to find a way to introduce this $8126 into the TT calculations, even though they don't seem to be wrong in the first place, knowing that Georgia will simply correct it. HOWEVER, I don't understand why they're wrong in TurboTax in the first place. Have you been able to do anything with all the screenshots and the token that have been sent?

@fanfare Yes, this makes total sense and what I thought the answer was based on my reading of the instructions for IRS Form 5329. I just needed someone to confirm and make sure I was doing it correctly when I went back to the Roth IRA contribution section and deleted the contributions. Thank you! From those instructions, the important part highlighted bold: You can withdraw some or all of your excess contributions for 2025 and they will be treated as not having been contributed if: You make the withdrawal by the due date, including extensions, of your 2025 tax return; and You withdraw any earnings on the withdrawn contributions and include the earnings in gross income (see the Instructions for Form 8606 for details). Also, if you hadn't reached age 59½ at the time of the withdrawal, include the earnings as an early distribution on line 1 of Form 5329 for the year in which you report the earnings. Report this amount on line 2 and enter exception number 21.

On the Car and Truck Expenses Worksheet, are you referring to Depreciation allowed or allowable? Or something else? Please clarify.
Depreciation allowed or allowable would have to be corrected and reported on amended prior year income tax returns.
If you are referring to Depreciation allowed or allowable,:
Allowed depreciation is the amount that you actually deducted on your tax returns.
Allowable depreciation is the amount that you were entitled to deduct whether you deducted or not.
Upon sale of the vehicle, the IRS requires using the higher amount even if you failed to claim the depreciation in prior years.

Turbotax deluxe keeps flagging the box 14 items on my NJ W-2 form, which are UI/WF/SWF (unemployment ins ) DI (disability) FLI (family leave ) and have 3 different dollar values, saying that it was a duplicate. My wife, who also works in NJ and has the same three entries does not get flagged. It's always been the same 3 entries in that box.

Q. How should he answer this question? If the 1099Q was sent directly to his school, should he select "Someone else"? A. No. Select Taxpayer. For 529 plans, there is an “owner” (usually the parent), and a “beneficiary” (usually the student dependent). The "recipient" of the distribution can be either the owner or the beneficiary depending on who the money was sent to. When the money goes directly from the Qualified Tuition Plan (QTP) to the school, the student beneficiary is the "recipient".
Q. For next year 2026 tax, when he needs to stay off campus, should all 529 distributions for off campus expenses be sent directly to the Apartment rental company?
A. No. That's not even an option. The 529 will only send the $ to the owner, beneficiary or the school.
Q. As long as we picked the option "someone else" received the 1099Q distribution, there is ZERO tax owed by him?
A. That's because TT now thinks "somebody else" was the recipient of the money (and the1099-Q) and has the responsibility for paying tax on any non qualified portion of the distribution.
Based on your description of your situation, neither you nor the student (nor anybody else) need to be entering the 1099-Q or 1098-T. There is nothing to report on your taxes. Furthermore, TurboTax is still broken in the 1099-Q and 1098-T sections. Delete them and the confusion will go away.
