So, there it is the false advertising. Each customer must pay $40 for each state and then they must pay an additional filing fee. So, once again Intuit's Turbo Tax is engaging in false advertising. So, you are telling us there is only one remedy. While Turbo Tax is using AI, so am I as should every other tax payer using your software. According to AI TurboTax engages in deceptive-advertising and recently lost one lawsuit due to this practice. According to AI the last $141M settlement was brought by all 50 state Attorneys General for deceptive "free" advertising. This 2026 new round of fits the same description of deceptive and unfair business practices. The fact is most people including myself would pay the filing fee for each state, but TurboTax is engaging in more than just that one deception, it is engaging in hidden or undisclosed fees, forced payment flows, and removal of the included "free state" mid-workflow. That results in double billing for the same service and misrepresentation of pricing. We already pay a premium for the software which advertises to include all states. So, why this year in particular are we forced to pay for the state portion of the software program we bought and the filing fees. According to AI the right course of action for ALL TURBO TAX USERS is to go directly to the FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION (FTC). AI has an entire path outlined and will prepare the complaint with the FTC and the CFPB (CONSUMER FINANCIAL PROTECTION BUREAU). AI also suggests alerting the state tax agency as well. While they cannot force TurboTax to refund directly, they can document and compile for another lawsuit forcing a settlement for a particular period of time.

Tofile the 5329, you need to go to the 1099-R entry under IRA, 401(k), and pension plan withdrawals. To generate IRS Form 5329 in TurboTax without a 1099-R (e.g., for a missed Required Minimum Distribution), you must trigger the penalty section, often by answering "No" to receiving a 1099-R and navigating through the RMD/penalty questions. You will be able to enter you abatement request.

Deleted and resubmitted form without benefit. Quit TT and restarted computer, no new updates as just updated and no change in issue. Went back and deleted 5695 again and for some reason it worked this time and shows my credit. So not sure what the issue was - could be related to the cache. Will see if it sticks for a while before filing my return at this point given the delays others seem to have had. If you had not tried deleting the form, quoting TT and then restarting the computer, re-opening TT and adding back Form 5695 via the Easy Step Update, it worked for me for this minute.

Do not change your return and do not remove your child. As long as this is your child and you meet the requirements for claiming your child as a dependent, you should file as normal but will have to mail the return as indicated by DoninGA.
Who can I claim as my dependent?
Rules for Claiming Dependents on Taxes
A person who tries to claim a child and is not the custodial parent is not allowed unless you have signed a Form 8332 allowing the non-custodial parent to claim the child.

@Blizzard1 Unfortunately, the question in the interview is misleading for your situation... If your box 2a has a non-zero number in it..(not blank, nor marked as undetermined), and that number is somewhat lower than the box 1 number, due to an after-tax contribution amount that is noted in box 5...then edit that retirement form again, and when you get to the following page (below), answer it as-if the displayed edits were present (i.e. you needed to answer YES). Answering YES will use the box 2a $$ amount on your for 1040. Check lines 5a and 5b before and after entering that 1099-R. (But if you answered No, and already entered some $$ in the "General" or "Simplified" calculation area ,you might need to delete your 1099-R first and re-enter it from scratch...not sure of that though) ____________________________________________________

Hello @MonikaK1. Thanks for the info, but as I said.. no, I never entered anything related to a Canadian pension. This is 100% a TurboTax software bug, so please don't blame the user.

So if I'm understanding this article correctly, say most my work is outside of my home, but I have a 'home office' space in my home with a computer and other stuff I use only for work related stuff like invoicing, bookkeeping, etc, then that would qualify as a principal place of business, and all the miles I drove for work would be tax deductible?

I wish I had more information from dead brother’s 2024 Return, but H&R Block did it so there is nothing in Turbotax for it since I did not prepare his 2024 Return. Had I known he was paying them $290, I would have offered to prepare it for a lot less, LOL. I have only the figures from last year and the 2 1099’s, so I guess I’ll need to follow IRS Instructions, page 32, for calculating the amount of taxable Social Security Income. Thank you for the info, probably others will be able to learn from the detail yoi provided in relation to Turbotax. I won’t be filing his Return through Turbotax bc it is incredibly simple, taxable Retirement Income & the Tax withholding, no other income or deductions whatsoever.

Since this is below the dependent filing requirement of $1,350 in unearned income, it should not be reported on your tax return, per the IRS instructions for Form 8814. This isn't your income, so you don't have the right to the capital losses, in any case.
Review the dependent filing requirements separately for your state tax return instructions.
You'll want to review the custodial 1099's for any federal or state tax withholding, in which case you may file a tax return for them to receive a refund.
See TurboTax FAQ - What's the Kiddie Tax?:
The Kiddie Tax applies if your child:
has unearned income (usually from investments) exceeding $2,700
is required to file a return
isn’t filing jointly
is under age 18 (or under age 24 if a full-time student) as of January 1, 2026
How is Kiddie Tax calculated?
The Kiddie Tax only applies to unearned income in excess of $2,700.
$0 - $1,350 isn't taxed.
$1,351 - $2,700 is taxed at the child’s tax rate.
Over $2,700 is taxed at the parents’ marginal tax rate.
Note that if the child has earned income in excess of the standard deduction (such as wages from part-time employment) they will be required to file their own tax return and include the UTMA investment income (the 1099's) on their own.

Having the exact same issue. I spent over 2 hours on the phone with TurboTax today and got no where. They opened an "investigation", which was closed within 15 minutes with no resolution.
