Thanks for your help. I never received a confirmation from turbo tax that I was not eligible so after running through the manual numbers, I got the clarity I needed.

We reviewed your Federal return and found no errors.   Smart Check   Congratulations! We reviewed your Nebraska return and found no errors.   When I run the Smart Check for the Federal and State combined, I get the following response.    Prior Year Amended Return   You’re amending a tax return for the year . The program calculations and forms you are using are for the year 2025. You should use the  program to do your amended return since the calculations and forms for each year are unique. If you use this program to amend your return, review the calculations and forms for the year you’re amending.   Note the end of the first sentence and between the words "the" and "program" in the second sentence. There is a space that appears to have a missing word. I am not amending a return nor have I marked that anywhere on either of the returns.

Thank you, what finally worked was your initial suggestion to "Add a State". Not sure why I didn't see it, but the TTax rep helped me find it and even now (after e-filing the Federal only), I see it at the very bottom of the Tax Home page - if you maximize the "Your tax returns & documents".   She mentioned that if you print your returns, whether you said you're done or not, TTax thinks it's done and won't let you edit anymore. So the problem was that I had printed my return but not yet filed it.   Thanks again for your help1

An error 70001 in TurboTax usually indicates that the desktop software believes another program is already running or there is a, user account/permission conflict.    To resolve this, immediately restart your computer, ensure no other TurboTax processes are active in Task Manager, and run the software as an administrator.  Try adjusting your firewall protections.   If this does not help you can uninstall and reinstall the program. How do I forcefully uninstall TurboTax for Windows?

I guess my issue is that I have researched and understand this is not a technical problem. However, why can't the software simply apply the rule and not show a negative in a line that is not allowed to have a negative as a result of the exemption. Also, I assume I will leave the $-300 and it will get ignored but I hate to fill out a form with values that are not valid.

You have posted in a thread that has been inactive to two years. There are some good tips earlier in this thread as to what to review in TurboTax when you find you are given the Standard Deduction instead of Itemized.    One common reason is that medical expenses are only deductible to the extent they exceed 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income, and only that excess is available to combine with your interest, deductible taxes, contributions, etc. and that total must exceed the standard deduction   For 2025, the Standard Deduction numbers are: Single and Married Filing Separately taxpayers: $15,750 Married Filing Jointly taxpayers: $31,500 those file as Head of Household: $23,625 In addition, the standard deduction is higher for taxpayers who are blind and/or age 65 or older. See this help article for more information. Your total itemized deductions would need to exceed the standard deduction in order for you to benefit from itemizing.   See also this article that explains how to switch between standard and itemized.   @user17708317711
