I am in California and having the same issue. they are forcing you to take it out of your federal taxes as a way to get you to upgrade for 45.00 more dollars. My boyfriend did that not realizing that he was being charged the additional 45.00 but his credit card payment went right thru with no problems. i have been on the phone with Turbo Tax for hours on end and they don't know how to fix it,

You can process the form 5329 in the TurboTax desktop software. You can use the Tax Tools option on your left menu bar while you are working on your return to then bring up Tools, which will have an option to Save your return to your computer so you don't need to start your online return over in the desktop version of TurboTax.
In the desktop TurboTax product, use the Forms menu option to bring up Form 5329. Scroll down to Part IX, line 52 and enter your required minimum distribution amount. Enter the amount of any RMD you took in line 53. Use the Waiver of Tax Smart Worksheet below line 53 to enter the amount you want to exclude from tax, and click on the Explain box to enter an explanation of why you missed making the distribution. You won't have to pay the tax for not taking your RMD on your return, pending a determination from the IRS later on.

Hi, I was entering the gross distribution, earnings and basis into TT Deluxe. It is not letting me move forward because it thinks that the Gross distribution is not the sum of the earnings and the basis. I have done the multiple times, and it is correct. Can someone please verify that there is not a bug in the code. Thank you

@DianeW777 What other future dates or is it just one time update on Feb 11? Reason I ask of because I want to finish and complete the taxes but would hate to mail it tomorrow and there is another update end of Feb or early March that I miss. How do we know if Feb 11 will be final and no more updates?

If you do not have a W-2 you do not have to enter one in TurboTax. As DoninGA says above, you can just move on to the next section.
Whether you need to file a federal tax return or not this year will depend on how much money you made in 2025, your age, and your filing status.
You can review this article to determine if you have to file a tax return this year: Do I need to file a federal return this year?

Perhaps, but if he is not related, he would have to meet the tests for a qualifying relative.
A dependent must meet the requirements of a qualifying child or a qualifying relative in order for you to claim them on your tax return.
The tests for a qualifying child are:
Relationship: Must be your child, adopted child, foster child, brother or sister, or a descendant of one of these (grand or nephew).
Residence: Must have the same residence for more than half the year.
Age: Must be under age 19 or under 24 and a full-time student for at least 5 months. They can be any age if they are totally and permanently disabled.
Support: The dependent must not have provided more than half of their own support during the year.
Joint Support: The child cannot file a joint return for the year.
The tests for a qualifying relative are:
Qualifying Child: They are not the “qualifying child” of another taxpayer or your “qualifying child.”
Gross Income: The dependent being claimed earns less than $5,200 in 2025.
Total Support: You provide more than half of the total support for the year.
Member of Household or Relationship: The person (a friend, girlfriend, non-blood relative) must live with you all year as a member of your household or be related to you.
TurboTax software will ask you simple questions and give you the tax deductions and credits for which you are eligible based upon your answers.

In the Education section, I entered 1099-Q first and then 1098-T. Though there was a check box in the step-by-step that asked whether 529 funds were used to pay loan, there was never a request for amount. So, how does Turbo tax know how much of 529 funds were used to pay loan? Because this amount should be used for the tax break. Also, I see earnings reported on this form. Shouldn't this be tax free? Is Turbo Tax treating it as such? Hopefully, I make sense. Otherwise, please notify me by replying to this message.
