Same issue here. Workaround: Find the 2024 file on your Mac, right click on it and choose "Open With >", and then choose TurboTax 2025 (instead of what is likely the default, Turbo Tax 2024).

No. This would not be taxable income. If you have been caring for her and she is finally able to contribute, you probably did not have a formal agreement that she would pay rent or any type of temporary lodging fee. She is contributing to expenses in the household, not renting a room from you. Shared expenses are not taxable income. If you were charging her Fair Market Value (what a stranger would pay) to stay with you, then that could be considered rent and would be reportable income on a Schedule E. However, if she has had no income since the pandemic and you have been paying for over half of her living expenses, it is possible that you could claim her as a dependent on your return for those years and possibly, depending on how much income she had in 2025, for 2025 as well.
If you did not claim her in the past years and she meets the criteria below, you can Amend Your Returns for the past 3 years to claim her as a dependent. If your filing status was single, then you could possibly be able to change the filing status to head of household if she lived with you.
To claim someone as a Qualifying Relative, they must be:
Your child ( including step children, adoptive children and foster children) or a descendent of them
Your sibling (including half siblings) or a child of your sibling or a sibling-in-law
Your parent or grandparents, including step parents and in laws
Any other person that lived with you for the entire tax year
Not a qualifying child of another taxpayer
Someone that you provided over half of their support for during the tax year
Has less than $5,200 in income for 2025 (not counting social security)- this limit is slightly less for prior years.
$5,050 for 2024
$4,700 for 2023
$.4400 for 2022
To qualify, you have to meet certain criteria. To file as Head of Household, you have to:
Pay for more than half of the expenses for a qualifying household
Be considered unmarried on the last day of the tax year or if married not have lived with your spouse at all for the last 6 months of the year
Have a qualifying child or dependent

Hopefully, you caught it before filing and haven't already efiled. More info would be needed to know what topic has the missing decimal. Is the entry error on the Federal side (which would flow to the state) or only on the state side? Both Federal and state have a lot of places where a decimal could be entered or omitted incorrectly. If you're sure it's just on the state side, you could march through the state screens and review everything to see if you can find it.

Your wife's child care (or babysitting) income is considered by the IRS as self-employed income, even if she didn't receive any tax form.
In TurboTax, you report this self-employed income under Other self-employed income. You can deduct related expenses from this income.
To do this, you need to use TurboTax Premium (Online) if you have expenses or any version TurboTax (CD/Download).
In TurboTax, under business income, just under Type of Income, click on Add Income for this work
On the next page, click on the radio button next to Other Self-employed Income
Click Continue to enter your income received in cash, checks or bank transfers.

If your tax return has been filed, you can't pull it back. You will have to wait for the IRS to completely process it and then file an amended tax return. If you filed Head of Household you will have to have a dependent. If that person was on another tax return that has already been filed, yours will be rejected. In that case, you won't have to change the return, you can just fix it. If another person should have claimed the dependent, you have two choices: Amend your return. The other person will have to wait for your amended return to be processed before they can E-file their return. Have them mail their return. The IRS will catch the discrepancy and send both of you a notice, You can then sort it out with the IRS directly. If you choose to amend, you can follow these steps: After your return is accepted, follow these steps: On the Tax Home screen, Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and Select the Amend (change) return dropdown, Then Amend using TurboTax Online. (If you're told to amend your return via TurboTax Desktop, follow the steps for TurboTax Desktop instead.) Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return. @ rinotataks113 wrote: Hello,i want ask something, when the state tax refund will be done? How many weeks/ days we waiting after federal tax refund arrive There's wide variation. There are over 40 state tax agencies each doing their own thing. I'll tell you how to check with your specific state below. Some states are fairly quick with refunds, while other states can take a long time processing returns--even several weeks--as they crack down on detecting fraudulent returns. Here are some things you should check: First, you need to be sure your state return was successfully filed. If you efiled, be sure your efiled state return was accepted. If you used Online TurboTax, you can check by looking at the Tax Home in your Online account. Or did you choose to file by mail instead? TurboTax does not mail it for you. If you chose that method, you have to print, sign, date, and mail it. The FAQ below tells how to check on a state refund. When you scroll down further there, you will see a link for your state. @Crystalwittman1215 wrote: I have put my account the past few times I used turbo tax and thought it would just go to my original bank account. The refund said it was going to MVB Bank, Inc. account. This is a user community forum--not a direct route to TurboTax Support. No one here can know anything specific about where your refund is going. However, MVB Bank is the bank used when someone either chooses to have their refunds go to a Credit Karma Money Spend account or uses one of the following optional offers that use a Credit Karma Money Spend account. Did you choose the "Up to 5 days early" offer? If you chose the free version of that offer, that uses a Credit Karma Money Spend account. Or did you happen to choose Refund Advance?

Thanks for this response @MelindaS1 Unfortunately nothing i could do in the normal user flow corrected the error i kept getting. Eventually, i went into "form" mode and adjusted the number that was on the 1b line, based on advice from chat gpt. This removed the error message, but the refund i was getting was suspiciously high, so i've decided to play it safe and hire a professional this year. I did see comments online that said the way Turbo Tax works with apportioning part of the year to NY State has some bugs. No matter how i asked it to calculate the earnings for NY (percentage, number of days, do not calculate, etc) i kept getting a higher number than made sense. Thans for responding. I appreciate the effort to explain this.

When you rent out part of your home, common expenses have to be apportioned between personal use and business use (rental) of your home. You need to calculate the percentage of business (rental) use. One common method is to divide the square footage of the rented portion by the total square footage of the house. In the rental section, you describe the rental property as the rented part of your home (for example Room in my Home). For depreciation, you will use as cost basis the prorated cost basis of the rented part. You will deduct as rental expenses the rental portion (total costs multiplied by the percentage of business use) of each common cost (such as mortgage interest, property taxes, utilities…). You also claim other costs specifically related to the rental such as repairs and maintenance, etc. In the personal section, you will claim in Itemized deductions the personal use portion of mortgage interest and property taxes. Please read this IRS publication, paragraph on Renting Part of Property on page 23.
