I used the method from SteamTrain to get rid of the Investment information required for a Canadian retirement. I have never had a Canadian or any other foreign investments. It was kind of a pain to delete the information I had already entered and then have to reenter it but SteamTrain's solution worked! Thank you everyone for your suggestions! Dmc48

I tried checking the Yes on 10a and sure enough it corrects the percentage. And that seems to only effect lines 22 & 23 but those don't flow through because line 25 (Standard mileage) is checked, and line 28e which only has a tiny effect on the end result because the new car was registered so late in the year that was a small number. My wife's RE Office is in our house, so she tracks all her RE miles showing houses, etc. and there are no commuting miles. By definition anything not business miles is personal miles, but they aren't specifically tracked in her log book. She does also track medical and volunteer miles for use in other areas of the tax forms, but those are personal miles too. So I can't legitimately check Yes on line 10a and guess I have to accept the end result, but I argue that the instructions for calculation of line 9 are clear and shouldn't be effected by things lower in the worksheet.

@renneberg Unfortunately, the question in the interview is misleading for your situation... If your box 2a has a non-zero number in it..(not blank, nor marked as undetermined), and that number is somewhat lower than the box 1 number, due to an after-tax contribution amount that is noted in box 5...then edit that retirement form again, and when you get to the following page (below), answer it as-if the displayed edits were present (i.e. you needed to answer YES). Answering YES will use the box 2a $$ amount on your for 1040. Checking lines 5a and 5b on your form 1040, before and after entering that 1099-R, and the 5b amount should be lower than line 5a. (But if you answered No, and already entered some $$ in the "General" or "Simplified" calculation area ,you might need to delete your 1099-R first and re-enter it from scratch...not sure of that though) __________________________

How to start a new joint return
You will not be able to merge two previous TT account to start your new joint return. You can transfer ONE of your 2024 returns into a new return, so choose the most complicated one. The other spouse’s information needs to be entered manually. The first name you enter will be the “primary” taxpayer——and in subsequent years you need to keep the names in that order—do not try to change the order of the names.
When you enter the primary spouse’s information in My Info, you have to answer the question "Were you married?" If you click the button for Married, then a drop down will appear that asks, "Do you want to file this return together with your spouse?" Then you choose YES to file a joint return. You enter your spouse's information into My Info. Whenever you are entering income information there should then be a spot for you and for your spouse's income information. WATCH for the names as you enter income on the screens. Or when you click to add income it will prompt you to choose which spouse had the income.
When you prepare a joint return you include all the information for both spouses on the SAME tax return. Include all of your personal information, all of your income from every source, all dependents (if any), all credits and deductions for both of you. You get ONE refund with both names on it.
And…keep a record of how to access the “old” account for your spouse in case a need comes up to print it or find information from it. TT will save it online for seven years,
