Please share a little more information to clarify whether you believe this is causing an issue within your tax return. Knowing the place in the inputs where you are seeing this message, or any possible issues resulting from this message could be useful to determine why the message is there. Otherwise, it could simply be a result of you entering a Form 1098 showing mortgage interest into your return.

The following information explains when a portion of social security income might be taxable. Review the numbers with your total income for a better picture of your situation
.When will some social security income become taxable?
if half of your social security, combined with your other taxable income is below the following base amounts, then none of your social security would count as taxable income.
The base amount for your filing status is:
$25,000 if you're single, head of household, or qualifying surviving spouse,
$25,000 if you're married filing separately and lived apart from your spouse for the entire year,
$32,000 if you're married filing jointly,
$0 if you're married filing separately and lived with your spouse at any time during the tax year.

You're right and dont let them gaslight you into thinking that LENDING MONEY for free, somehow, justifies you paying a fee to a third party private company to recover your own money. That's just extortion. What happens if you DONT pay the fee and taxes? You'll go to jail or have your wages garnished by force or be brought to court. It's a greedy sick country we live in. No other countries with morals or ethics would allow this yet its normalized here as if Turbotax is helping us when they arent. The govt should take over turbotax like they did TikTok and make it a free service for all. Intuit get call it even for robbing us for years

Also, your comment regarding “go to Other Tax Situations and review the Underpayment Penalty just in case - it's possible in some cases for the penalty to apply even if you have a refund” is something we should ALL review BEFORE submitting our taxes! Again, thank you!

So, you go to jail if you don't pay taxes and between that you get charged by a private company that you have to choose one. That's just extortion at that point. There should be 0 fees unless they give you direct help from a professional with a degree. That is utter BS to be defending the practice of a govt forcing citizens to pay a third party mafia to pay their taxes that are already overpaid. We all are lending them our money by choice, then they charge us a fee to recover our own money via 3rd party company with no customer service besides call centers in india. Get real. Lick those boots some more

Did you receive a confirmation email that your taxes were filed with TurboTax? When you log into your tax software, what does it show as your status?

Additionally, when filing with TurboTax, you have the option to pay for your fees with your federal or state (if applicable) refund. If you choose this option, there's an additional refund processing service fee which will also be deducted from your refund.

You do not claim VA payments for education or training from the Veteran's Affairs as income on your return. These benefits are tax free.
On the flip side, since you are not including them in your income, you cannot take any type of education credits for the payments made by the VA for education. This would be considered double dipping (getting a benefit for something you didn't pay for with taxable income) which is not allowed. If the VA benefits only covered a portion of your education expenses, you may still be able to claim a credit for the amount you paid, that was NOT covered by the VA.
Example,
Your Tuition is $20,000
The VA paid $10,000
You can claim the remaining $10,000 for an education credit if otherwise eligible. Lifetime Learning Credit
You can take this for an unlimited number of years
Twenty percent of expenses up to $10,000 (Maximum credit is $2,000)
Non-Refundable meaning this can reduce the amount of taxes you owe, but if your tax liability is less than the LLC, your tax will be reduced to $0 and the rest of the credit is lost.
Cannot be claimed as a dependent on any one else's return (The person claiming the student on their return may claim the credit)
Be enrolled for at least one academic period beginning in the tax year. Academic Period can be semesters, trimesters, quarters, or any other period of study such as a summer school session. The school determines academic periods. For schools that use clock or credit hours and do not have academic terms, the payment period may be treated as an academic period.
Be enrolled or taking courses at an eligible educational institution.
Be taking higher education course or courses to get a degree or other recognized education credential or to get or improve job skills.
To claim the full credit, your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) must be $80,000 or less ($160,000 or less for married filing jointly).
You receive a reduced amount of the credit if your MAGI is over $80,000 but less than $90,000 (over $160,000 but less than $180,000 for married filing jointly).
You cannot claim the credit if your MAGI is over $90,000 ($180,000 for joint filers).
You cannot be Married Filing Separately
American Opportunity Tax Credit.
Available for the first 4 years of college
Max amount is $2,500 per student
Partially refundable credit meaning if your tax liability is $0, 40% (up to $1,000) is refundable
Be enrolled in a degree or credential seeking program
Not have a felony drug conviction
Be enrolled at least half time
Cannot be claimed as a dependent on anyone else's return. (The person claiming the student may claim the credit)

Because the IRS received the return & rejected it, I think that they will reject anything other than that file with the corrected info. I'm not sure, haven't gotten through to IRS yet. Please let us know if you find out that's a possibility! In my opinion, TT should have caught the error, if there was one, before transmitting returns. Since we didn't use the ACA insurance in 2025, it shouldn't reject only because we used it in 2024.

Q1. Is he required to file, federal or state?
A1. Maybe not.
Scholarships are a hybrid between earned and unearned income. It is earned income for purposes of the $15,750 filing requirement (2025) and the dependent standard deduction calculation (earned income + $450). It is not earned income for the kiddie tax and other purposes (e.g. EIC). For grad students and post grad fellows, scholarship, stipend and fellowship income is earned income ("compensation") for IRA contributions.
Taxable scholarship goes on line 8r of Schedule 1, from which TT treats it as hybrid income.
I'm not from California, but my reading of the rules is there is a $5706 (2025) income filing requirement, which he appears not to meet.
Q2. Does the kiddie tax pertain to him?
A2. Technically, yes. But, effectively no, because his standard deduction wipes out all his taxable income.
I can't comment of the APTC issue.

If you are having issues in Step 3 of the filling process and are trying to pay your TurboTax Fees with our refund transfer program, there's a known issue that it won't let you move forward if your State refund doesn't cover TurboTax fees. Even though, you might have enough on your Federal portion to cover it.
The issue has been identified and the program should be functioning properly very soon. Please update your software and try again later today.
However, if you would prefer to file now, you can do so by using your TurboTax fees with a credit card instead of using pay with my refund.
