This is still an issue for tax year 2025.  I itemized Federal, and even the manual by hand math shows I have a NY deduction much greater than the standard even with income reductions.. Turbo Tax online gives me no option for the IT-196 or even to choose standard versus itemized.  The online tax experts agree and still no luck.

Roughly 37% of taxpayers are eligible. Examples of situations included in a simple Form 1040 return (assuming no added tax complexity): W-2 income Interest, dividends or original issue discounts (1099-INT/1099-DIV/1099-OID) that don’t require filing a Schedule B IRS standard deduction Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Child Tax Credit (CTC) Student loan interest deduction Taxable qualified retirement plan distributions   Examples of situations not included in a simple Form 1040 return: Itemized deductions claimed on Schedule A, like charitable contributions, medical expenses, mortgage interest and state and local tax deductions Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G Business or 1099-NEC income (often reported by those who are self-employed, gig workers or freelancers) Stock sales (including crypto investments) Income from rental property or property sales Credits, deductions and income reported on other forms or schedules        How can I see my TurboTax  fees?  https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/intuit-account-billing/review-fees-turbotax-online/L1XnIzgzg_US_en_US?uid=m682vq7k   If your TurboTax fees are higher than expected, you can reduce them by removing add-ons     (BEFORE you e-file) :   Remove Premium Services Remove MAX Defend & Restore Remove a state Remove PLUS Help & Support Remove Pay With Your Refund     Or—-Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free.  There are 8  free software versions available from the IRS Free File site   https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/

You do not "get" a $2200 refund for your child----The full amount of the CTC is $2200, but the refundable part ---called additional child tax credit is up to a maximum of $1700 per child, based on how much you earned from working. Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number.    Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment.  If your child was born in 2025 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year.  There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support.  Say NO to that question     Have you entered income from working in 2025?  If not,  you will not receive an income tax refund based on having dependent children.     The maximum amount of the child tax credit is now $2200 per child; the refundable “additional child tax credit” amount is $1700.   In order to get that credit, you have to have income from working.     Take the amount you earned from working.   Subtract $2500.   Multiply the rest by 15%.  That is the additional child tax credit per child that you can get—- up to the maximum of $1700 per child.   If the amount you earned from working was low, you will not get the full $1700 per child.    If your child is older than 16 at the end of 2025, you do not get the CTC.  But you may still get the non-refundable $500 credit for other dependents instead.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/taxation/child-tax-credit/L2lNhfGDl_US_en_US?uid=m68dfq2u   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/taxation/additional-child-tax-credit/L6xFeMFEf_US_en_US?uid=lqnuygah https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/does-my-childdependent-qualify-for-the-child-tax-credit-or-the-credit-for-other-dependents     And for the Earned Income Credit—-   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-credits-deductions/qualifications-earned-income-credit-eic-eitc/L7w4BFP32_US_en_US?uid=m62rmz09   https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/earned-income-tax-credit/use-the-eitc-assistant   https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p596.pdf   Look at your 2025 Form 1040 to see the child-related credits you received   PREVIEW 1040 https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/preview-turbotax-online-return-filing/L77WCkvnu_US_en_US?uid=m681fkhr   Child Tax Credit line 19 Credit for Other Dependents line 19 Earned Income Credit line 27 Additional Child Tax Credit line 28

Based on what you say, TurboTax 2025 is in worse shape than TurboTax 2024 for RMD processing. Wait until Valentine's Day for more updates before e-Filing.   @LosRubios

Hi, I’m trying to file my 2025 taxes and I need some clarification.   Here’s my situation: Total tuition for the year = $9,559 For one semester (tuition $4,700), I paid $2,350 upfront before the scholarship was awarded Then I received a $5,000 scholarship for the year The school refunded me $2,350 (my payment) + $300 extra   My question is: Does this refund of the money I paid affect my return? In another tax filing software, there's a question syaing “Did  AAA receive a refund of any educational expenses paid in 2025?”   I’m confused because I technically got a refund of the money I paid, but the scholarship still leaves $4,559 of net tuition for the year.   Should I answer Yes or No to this refund question? How would this affect the American Opportunity Credit?

You would show it as being rented out the entire year.  There is no way (an no need) to "tag the rental" to explain why the rental amount was so low.  Rental properties frequently become vacant when one tenant moves out while attempting find another tenant and/or to make repairs.  The question is, was the property "in service" and it was.  Even if you didn't have a tenant while you did the repairs it would still be in service and the normal expenses (e.g. depreciation, interest, property tax, etc.) would be deductible.
