Did you click that big orange button that said “Transmit my return now?” If you did that, you cannot do anything to fix it yet. You have to wait for the email that tells you if your return was accepted or rejected.
Since the IRS will not begin to accept/reject returns until January 26, you are going to be waiting in “pending” for awhile. Your return is sitting on a server, where you cannot fix it or get it back.
You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.
If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.
Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
The Form 1040X you need becomes available in late February, But wait until your return has been processed.

Very interesting. @rjs did you hear back from the tax foundation? Do you believe Fidelity Charitable is wrong as well?

You sound confused. You do not have to pay tax to get your refund. But maybe you are not getting a refund. What do you see on line 35a of your Form 1040? Is there an amount there?
Or is there an amount on line 37 instead---if so, you owe federal tax and are not getting a refund.

Or...another possibility----did a "summary" shown to you confuse you?
The “summary” given to you by TurboTax may have confused you. That summary just nets out the difference between a refund you are getting and an amount you owe. Or it adds two refunds or tax “due” amounts together.
The federal and state treasuries are completely separate from each other.
Your state tax due cannot be paid from a federal refund.
And….your federal tax due cannot be paid from a state refund.
Neither refund can be used to pay the amount due to the other one.
If you owe tax due, you have to pay it yourself by the filing deadline on April 15, 2026.
If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment. For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

Hello I applied for my kids ITIN this month and also filed returns along with it. I have employment income with W2. I mailed the ITIN APPLICATIONS - W7 Forms for my kids and my wife and also attached my files return. But the tax preparer told me that I am not eligible for CTC as I applied for my kids ITIN this year in 2026. I would have been eligible if I have applied it last year. My kids lived with me last year whole year and we actually moved to the US in May 2025. My question is why I am not eligible for CTC ?

You can put anything you want to for "occupation" The IRS only uses that for statistical purposes. It has no effect on your tax due or refund. If you want to say "Retired" that is fine.
