@user17728090640 wrote: So perhaps the concerns about the IRS automatically rejecting returns that do not include 1095-A information is no longer the case.   The confusion comes from the Advance credit (column C of the 1095-A).  If there was Advance credit, it WILL be rejected by the IRS if it is not included with the tax return.   Most people who have a 1095-A received Advance credit.  Because of that, it is a common misbelief that ALL returns will be rejected without their 1095-A (but in reality, it is only rejected if there was Advance credit).

If you are a Pennsylvania (PA) resident, then you must add a state line in the W-2 to include PA to that W-2. You can use the federal ID if you don't have a PA ID, just enter the numbers without any dash. Include the wages for your MD employer.   Maryland (MD) and PA have a reciprocal agreement so there is no reason to add any MD wages on the W2, if there is no MD withholding.   Enter the state wages for PA, and if there is any 401(k) amounts, be sure to add them back to the state wages (should be higher than the federal wages in box 1, if applicable). PA does not allow tax free income placed in a retirement account like the IRS.   @Pocono78

Even if they would add up to more or less. And maybe try leaving the cents off both the 1099R and the RMD questions.

We made a prepayment in 2025 for STATE (NC) taxes, and cannot find a way to enter this on our forms.

Please disregard - I was able to figure it out by going to forms and the Capital Asset Sales Entry Worksheet.  There, I was able to enter the codes and adjustment amounts.

No, you cannot claim the credit for the same item in two different years.   Under the IRS rules for the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C), the credit is only available for the tax year in which the property is placed in service (initially installed and ready for use).   Since your gas combo boiler was installed and put into use in 2024, that was the only year you were eligible to claim it.

@saccojohn , lacking exact details such as your resident state, type of pension etc., I am very confused  and must be missing something ---- Pensions have always been sourced to the resident state .   Just like  and in  general interest earning are sourced to resident state. However, if you are really having an issue of  domestic pension being sourced to the state of earlier employment and not your resident state, please help me  simulate the scenario --- give me details sufficient for creating this on Windows desktop  --I have Home & Business.  Would be excited to try and see what gives.

If you have an expense item eligible for the home energy credit, say $17,500 for a gas fired combo boiler for floor heating system, can you take the credit after the first year it was installed and put in use?  Installed and put in use in 2024 and took the credit of $600.  Wondering if I can take the credit for 2025 too.

Do  you get Social Security?  If you do then check 1040/1040 SR line 6b and see if the taxable amount is  0.  For the Social Security, you get 0 on 6b if you didn't answer the Foreign question right. Or if the amount on 6b is too low and you are married you answered it wrong for one spouse.

A couple reasons it could be saying you need to upgrade…… You might be seeing this because of form 8959, that goes to Schedule 2. The amount of Medicare taxes withheld in W2 box 6 is not exactly 1.45% of the Medicare wages in box 5, due to rounding. I read a post that said to try leaving the cents off of the Medicare tax on your W2 box 6. Box 6 has to be exactly 1.45% of box 5 or less. If it is saying you need Schedule 3 and can't use the Free Edition it might be giving you the Retirement Savings Credit. You can say you are a student to decline the credit. You must answer Yes when asked in the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit section if your were a full-time student. The answer to this same question asked in the personal-information section is not the answer that is used.
