Doing this is as an "other" investment worked, but there are several minor (I hope) glitches. It wasn't quite right was that I had to select the type of investment as "stock (non-employee)" even though I am an employee (the only employee). The stock was not issued as part of an employee stock program, though, so this was the closest selection allowed by TT. Also, there is some mismatch since the corporation issued to me a 1099-DIV for the liquidating distribution (which it the correct way to report this). TT thinks that there was a 1099-B even though this was a direct transaction between the corporation and me, not through a broker. Also, after filling in the information for the "other" investment, TT reports that it "needs review" even though all fields are completed and are accurate. I cannot see anything needing review. So, it's a workaround but shouldn't be necessary. TurboTax SHOULD let me include basis information for regular 1099-DIV, box 9 distributions. The statement by the "employee tax expert" that "The cash liquidation amount from box 9 should be there on a list. Click 'edit' next to it and you'll be able to enter the basis." is completely wrong. There is no "edit"next to box 9. If it existed as some point, it no longer exists.

It depends. If you complete your Federal return before your State return, your state return will be automatically populated with amounts and information from your Federal return. Complete the state return interview questions to identify any additional subtractions or other adjustments needed to the state return that weren't transferred from the Federal return.
If you are using a Desktop version of TurboTax, you can go to Forms Mode (select Forms from the top menu when you are in Step by Step or Easy Step mode) and review the forms TurboTax has prepared from your entries. Note any items that still need to be adjusted in the State interview.
If you are using TurboTax Online, you can preview your return before filing to find out how your taxes were calculated. See here for details. You can also view the Tax Summary under Tools on the left-side menu in TurboTax Online.
The specific items you may need to adjust on your state return will depend on the state. You can post additional details here in this thread if you have more questions. You can also find contact information for your state tax agency at this link.

@anndaemer wrote: I have been "chatting" with Turbo Tax's AI program for over an hour and done ALL the things it told me to do. I've also called the 800 number and the calls fail to go through. Sorry, but suggesting I go to the Turbo Tax page is NOT helpful. Sorry you're having trouble. You haven't mentioned what the issue is other than "can't get it to work," which is not enough to go on. Did you install your product as in the FAQ below, and are you using the activation screen that's pictured in the FAQ? If so, what happens when you proceed to enter the license code, which is a 16-digit alphanumeric code? Does it provide any error message? FAQ: Getting started with desktop TurboTax https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/license-information/install-turbotax-cd-download-software-license-code/L1wFOSXur_US_en_US You said you couldn't reach Customer Support. Is this the number you were using? Hours are 5AM-9PM Pacific, 7 days/week https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/contact/ Here's another option: You mentioned Facebook above. If you use social media, you can contact a TurboTax Support agent directly through messaging at Facebook or X, where they should be able to help you with a license code issue. https://x.com/TeamTurboTax or https://www.facebook.com/turbotax

Intuit (the makers of TurboTax software) announce on or about 10/20/2025 that TurboTax 2025 in any form (online or download) must be used with Windows 11. It is regrettable, but whomever told you was incorrect. The download to upgrade from Windows 10 to 11 is fairly straightforward. Do a search in Google for "Upgrading from Windows 10 to 11" and you will get plenty of advice on the best way to do it.

Part II Box E is "Long-term transactions reported on Form(s) 1099-B showing basis was not reported to the IRS" i.e. "non-covered" sales what type of asset was it - usually these are older bond holdings which pre-dated the requirements for brokers to track and report the acquisition data. you need to find the cost basis based on your own records - statements or trade confirmations.

The culprit is often a cluttered or "broken" cache. Since these temporary files can interfere with how the software loads, cleaning them out usually fixes the issue.
If you are using the web-based version, try these three troubleshooting methods:
Clear out your stored cache and cookies
Use an Incognito or Private window
Try logging in through a different web browser (for example, moving from Chrome to Firefox or Edge)

The likely reason one restaurant is withholding federal tax while the other is not likely comes down to the "One Big Beautiful Bill" passed in July 2025, which introduced a federal income tax deduction for up to $25,000 in tips. Your employers have likely handled this transition differently: one restaurant may have updated its payroll system or your Form W-4 to stop withholding tax in response to this new $25,000 deduction, while the other may still be withholding "the old way" to let you claim the deduction as a refund when you file.
If you would like federal tax withheld, you can update your W-4 with your employer to request a certain amount withheld per pay.

If you use an Online version of TurboTax, you have the option to start your return without paying for it (even if a paid edition). As long as the product is not paid for or registered, you have the option to clear the return and start over.
TurboTax Online saves your progress as you go. TurboTax Desktop asks you if you want to save your file before you exit a session.
See this article for help finding a missing tax file in TurboTax Desktop.
If you open TurboTax Online and don't see the information you entered, check to see if it's possible that you are logging in with a different User ID and therefore, you are not finding the tax return that you started. Usually, this is the case if you log in a do not find your already started or complete tax returns and instead are being asked to start from the beginning.
To get a list of your User ID's and recover accounts, you can use the tool at this link. If you have more than one email address, you can run the tool on each one.

If you cannot obtain your spouse’s Social Security Number and do not have access to prior joint tax returns to find it, you will likely be unable to e-file and must instead file a paper return by mail.
In your tax software, enter a placeholder sequence of zeros and nines to bypass the error messages, then print the final return and manually strike through the placeholder, writing "Unknown" or "Refused" in the spouse's SSN box. Since you do not have children and are not legally separated by a final court decree, you must use the Married Filing Separately status, however, be aware that if your spouse chooses to itemize deductions on her return, the IRS will require you to itemize as well, even if your personal deductions are $0.
To prevent future processing delays, you should also attach a brief, signed cover letter to your mailed return explaining that you are in the midst of a divorce and your spouse is unreachable or unwilling to provide her information.
