I am the executor of my late Aunt's estate, which was largely two pieces of real estate and some stocks and bank accounts, and being an executor is not my profession (though this did seem like a full time job at times), and no non-interest income was generated during the process of liquidating and distributing the estate assets.   The proceeds from the sale of one of the pieces of real estate was put into an interest bearing account until final distribution to two beneficiaries was approved by the court.  The other property was transferred in title to two other beneficiaries, and the cash from liquidation of the stocks and bank accounts was placed in a separate interest bearing account and distributed to other beneficiaries upon approval from the Probate Court.  Interest earned on the funds from the real estate sale placed into the first account amounted to approx $30,000, and the funds in the second account was around $130.  Attorney's fees of about $14,000 and other expenses of $56,000 were paid over the course of resolving the estate.   My questions are:  1) does a 1099-NEC need to be filed for the payment of fees to the attorney; 2) does an estate tax return need to be filed for the interest income and expenses of administering the estate?  If so, since this was not an ongoing business, but an EIN was issued for the estate, what type of return needs to be filed?

I tried a dozen of online tax calculators, but they all either focus on only one tax type (and miss important tax liabilities), or have a gazillion questions and take forever. So, I made my own. It calculates all main federal taxes (income, medicare, medicaid, capital gain, ...) and combines everything into a single quick overview. Takes only a few secs to enter all relevant income details. Currently, no state/local taxes and no self-employment tax. If something would be better, I would love feedback! Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities.  There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.   TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  “21 days”  is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.      First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:  https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/   Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.     You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2024 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:    https://www.irs.gov/refunds   To track your state refund:     https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_US_en_US?uid=lt447ebr   If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing     https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/refunds-take-longer-others/L14YlqFrH_US_en_US?uid=lexdr7zh . https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/irs-refund-taking-longer-21-days/L2vRAJbdU_US_en_US?uid=lexe7lst
the IRS allows e-filing of prior years but Turbotax doesn't after the extended due date of the return (10/15/2025 for 2024 retunrs)

you can depreciate the vehicle and deduct other costs (actual costs method) or use the standard mileage method.  the problem you're likely to face is that if you use actual costs they should be allocated among the properties. Turbotax has no feature that makes it easy.

When you phone the IRS customer service line, if you reach an AI triage robot, don't mention the word "refund," or you may get an automated reply.  Try using "account" as a key word.  For instance, say something like "speak to an agent about my account."  If it then asks you something else, say the same thing again, etc.  Finally, it may get tired and transfer you to an agent.   If you are unable to get good assistance from the IRS, we can tell you how to contact the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service, who are more likely to help you if you are having an economic hardship.    "About ready to give up on ever receiving it. "            No, you shouldn't give up.  If you are due a refund,  you should get it eventually.   It once took me until January (10 months) to get one, and for some people it takes longer than that.  But you do need to talk to the IRS to ask them what the issue is.   When I phoned them, the agent spent a lot of time looking at various things and once she spotted a possible holdup, was able to do something to help tweak it.  They are usually friendly and helpful, but it does sometimes take considerable effort to reach one.    As a last resort, when direct talk with IRS agent and Taxpayer Advocate Service failed to move things forward, some folks have had to seek assistance from their fed Congressman's local district office.

The actual Form 4562 that is filed with your return is just a Summary of the Depreciation for the current year and only lists out the new assets and not the prior the items. You may have a 4562 Depreciation and Amortization Report which does list all the items including fully depreciated items.  If you don't have the 4562 Depreciation and Amortization Report or need more info you need the Asset Life History. The history is only available in the Desktop program not the Online version. If you are using the Online version you would have to download your .tax2024 file and open it in the desktop program.
