If you were a resident for ALL of 2024, then you would not check that box. If you became a resident after January 1st, you would check that box and would need to file as a dual status resident. This means you would also need to file a form 1040NR in addition to the 1040. TurboTax does not support the 1040NR, but our partner Sprintax does and can help with your non resident return.

my son is in college and worked a summer sales job in a different state. He was living in an apartment for 2 1/2 months, paid for by his company. He had the pay for food, kitchen supplies and any other living necessities. His company had each employee purchase a gym membership and requested the team work out each morning before going to work. He received a 1099-NEC and made approx 10,000. He didn't have a car up there. I filed his taxes, he owed 1,500 (for the self employee tases) plus another 450 in state tax. My question is can I amend his tax form and include any business deductions for food, the gym and living necessities to reduce the amount of tax owed? (reduce the amount paid, since we paid them all yesterday with online filing)

I have been purchasing Audit Defense through Turbo Tax for over 10 years. I have just discovered that, for tax years 2023 and 2024, the product sold to me through Turbo Tax was for only 1year. It was no longer effective after 4-15-2024 and 4-15 of the next year. The person at TaxAudit.com said there were 2 versions (one for a year and one for as long as you might be audited), and I had bought the 1 year version for the past 2 years. I couldn't believe it. I just went through the order process again through Turbo Tax when you are ready to file, and they NEVER ask you what version of Audit Defense you want (1 year or the length of the statute of limitations on audits. NEVER, So why is Turbo Tax selling me the 1 year version. WHO WOULD BUY AUDIT PROTECTION FOR ONE YEAR ANYWAY??? That makes no sense. Has this happened top anyone else? What can we do. I now have 2 years of taxes with no audit protection,,,

Line 26 of the IT-201 is for government pension exclusion. If your pension was from a NY state, local, or federal government agency, you can enter your exclusion here. Otherwise, your exclusion would need to be on line 29.
Line 29 of the IT-201 should be editable. Which version of TurboTax are you using?

Yes, you are correct. Only holdings for nonresident states would need to be continually tracked so that you have the required information for each particular state. It's part of the process in your situation.
The filing requirement is important for each state as well. Some nonresident states require a return if you file federal and any income is from their state, some require only if you meet the filing requirement, still others require net income versus gross income.
Do I need to file a state return?
For any state that is not required to be filed, then you would need to manually track the carryforwards if they also conform to the federal tax laws.

Linda, Did you not read my question completely? There was no underpayment issue involved. It was about an overpayment or a possible late estimated tax payment. Your answer was not helpful.

You will want to get a total for each category of income/deduction, then divide in half. From the one half total, you will add or subtract to each person's share. For example- A Income= $70,000 B Income= $40,000 TOTAL = $110,000 (one half = $55,000/each spouse reports one half) A= $70,000 MINUS $15,000= $55,000 (subtraction adjustment of $15,000) B=$40,000 PLUS $15000-= $55,000 (addition adjustment of $15,000)
