You should not file your state tax return if your federal tax return is not complete and final. The state tax return takes information from the federal tax return. If you file your state tax return before your federal tax return is complete, some of the information in the state tax return might turn out to be wrong. In addition, if you make changes to your federal tax return it might automatically change the state tax return in TurboTax, so it will no longer match the state tax return that you filed. You would then have a very messy situation where you have to amend your state tax return, but you no longer have the original state tax return in TurboTax.
I strongly recommend that you wait to file your state tax return until you have finished your federal tax return. If you have not already missed the state filing deadline, file an extension for the state tax return.

I am a non-resident alien (NRA) and recently discovered that TurboTax does not support Form 1040-NR, which is required for my tax status. However, the software allowed me to complete and pay for a return that is not valid for non-residents. I believe this is misleading and has caused me to file an incorrect tax return.
Per the TurboTax Satisfaction Guarantee, I am requesting a full refund of the $143 charge, as the product did not meet my needs and was not suitable for my tax situation.

Did the change you made come from the federal return? If you want to e-file the state, you will have to e-file the federal. But if you file by mail, you can opt to only mail the state.

I did my Federal and VA State taxes with TurboTax Deluxe, and ended up owing over $3000 to VA State Income Tax, and was told I must pay them electronically...I paid them thru the TurboTax Bank Transfer process (EFT/ACH), and am hoping that is OK.... Question: What is the deal with the VA-8453 form...Online it is saying we need to sign that within a day of the tax submission being accepted...but that form doesn't seem to be filled out in the final printed version... Can anyone tell me what this form is all about, what I need to do with it, and why it's so darn confusing?? Thanks

Review this TurboTax FAQ and step back through the filing steps to re-submit your return. Did you file with TurboTax last year? If you filed late, you may need to use zero.

@PatriciaV Thank you very much and this is also the answer I am looking for. There is a small twist with my situation though - My wife and I own a LLC (pass-through entity), which invested in a partnership-A, who withheld state tax from its distributions but not reported in it's K-1 (I can see it from its statements). In this case, can I also report the state tax withholding as you suggested during my Federal/State tax return? I was hoping the tax withheld can somehow be reflected in my LLC's K-1 first, which will then flow through to my federal tax. I do not know if there is a way to do it (I purchased TuroTax Business). Maybe it's not necessary if I can just follow what you suggested here and directly put it in my Federal and State tax. Appreciate your further advise.

We’ve partnered with WA State to simplify the application process and offer it through TurboTax for free.
