Where did you enter it and did you tell TurboTax you itemized your return last year?   If your total itemized taxes were more than $10,000 and the refund only makes up the amount that would be over $10,000 then it would not be taxable income.   If it was part of the $10,000 then it would be taxable income.    If it is not be sure that you enter it as State and local refund 1099-G and then say that you itemized your return.

I am going to suggest these steps below. I think you might be having an issue other users have experienced with installing when using Windows 10. Type "environment" in the windows search bar.  This will bring up "Edit the System Environment Variables" as a match.  Clicking on it takes you to the "Advanced" tab of a dialog box titled "System Properties."  Near the bottom of the dialog box, click on the pushbutton labeled "Environment Variables...".  This brings up a separate dialog box that shows the current values for user environment variables at the top and system variables at the bottom. In the list of user environment variables, you should see both TEMP and TMP, and their current values.  Click on each, then click on the "Edit..." pushbutton.  This brings up another dialog box in which you can change the "Variable value" to "C:\Temp" (be sure to change the variable value, not the variable name).  This folder must, of course, exist for this step to work properly.  OK out of all the dialog boxes and retry the install.      Environment variable changes take effect immediately, so if this is the only change you make, it's not necessary to reboot.

If you prepared your Ohio return within TurboTax, you will need to print out Form OH IT-NRC as it is not supported for electronic filing.   Here is a link to download, prepare,  and print the form.  Once you complete the form and enter the result on line 3 of the 1040, you can send in the amended return. You won’t get that form if you earned less than $5,000 but you can complete your Schedule C without it reporting your income as cash.

Eureka!  I just got it to work.  I had entered info manually last year and the shell form was in my return (but empty). I wondered if maybe it wouldn't import because of that, so I deleted the shell and tried again.  And it worked! Not sure if that was really the problem, but it's solved now.

If you are no longer an educator, then this would not fall under the education expenses.  As mentioned above, you can use the value as a donation to charity if you itemize your return.    Itemized expenses include mortgage interest, gambling losses up to winnings,  charitable contributions, state and local taxes up to $10,000, medical expenses in excess of 7.5% of your AGI and casualty and losses in excess of 10% of you AGI with the first $100 not counting towards the loss.     Then your total itemized expenses would need to be greater than your standard deduction below in order to benefit from your expenses.    The 2024 Standard Deductions are as follows: Married Filing Joint (MFJ)              $29,200 Married Filing Separate (MFS)      $14,600 Head of Household (HOH)             $21,900  Single                                                 $14,600                                 Blind or over 65 and MFJ or MFS add $1,550 Single or HOH if blind or over 65 add $1,950     Standard versus Itemized Deduction

This conversion is taxable. And the tax due on this conversion depends on your tax bracket when you add the amount of conversion to your projected taxable income in 2025.   For example, if your marginal tax bracket for the conversion is 32%, then you'll owe $32,000 of additional taxes on a conversion of $100,000.   The marginal tax brackets for 2025 can be found in this IRS document.

If you do not pay in enough tax from withholding and estimates, you may have to pay a penalty for underpayment of estimated tax. The penalty is an Estimated amount. Even if you are getting a refund you can still owe a penalty for not paying in evenly during the year. Generally, most taxpayers will avoid this penalty if they owe less than $1,000 in tax after subtracting their withholdings and credits, or if they paid at least 90% of the tax for the current year, or 100% of the tax shown on the return for the prior year, whichever is smaller. It is included in your tax due or reduces your refund. If you get a penalty on 1040 line 38, you might be able to eliminate it or at least reduce it. You can go to Federal Taxes tab or Personal tab, under Other Tax Situations and select Start by the Underpayment Penalties. You will answer a series of questions that may reduce or eliminate the penalty. Or you can elect to have the IRS figure the penalty for you. It's form 2210. How to add form 2210 for Underpayment Penalty https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-payments/help/how-do-i-add-form-2210/00/25703   It's under Federal or Personal (for Home & Business Desktop) Other Tax Situations Additional Tax Payments Underpayment Penalties - Click the Start or update button

First, the fact that some of it is taxable to the federal, tells me the employer paid for some portion of the premiums. See Life insurance & disability insurance proceeds | IRS. This means if you paid all of your premium, all of your disability is tax free. If you paid 40% of your premium and your employer paid the rest, then 40% of your disability is tax free. Second, IL DOR is limited in who is not taxed on disability. Link for IL Univ employees above - not taxable  IL municipal Retirement Fund - not taxable    Social Security - not taxable Third,  if you have private insurance that has a federal taxable portion, it sounds taxable in IL. (I called and escalated to a senior service specialist at IL DOR- this is for TY24 and rules do change).   My thoughts are that disability is actually is taxable  to the state if it is taxable to the federal, except for the definitely not taxable section. Maybe that section is larger and they just didn't mention everything.   Note: the federal does share filings with the state. You may have federal income but not state, depending on your situation.  @williamsb645 IN also begins with the federal AGI so you may get a tax credit on IL for tax paid to IN.

There are a number of reasons why your refund amount may change from one year to the next. Some of the most common reasons are because you earned more income this year, you did not withhold enough taxes from your pay or you did not make enough estimated tax payments, or your deductions and credits were reduced this year.  For more information, please review, "Why did my refund go down compared to last year's?".

I'm having the same trouble.  I get a message that says "Success! We've got your tax data.  You can return to Turbo Tax" but when I return to TT, the download isn't there.  I have made sure all antivirus protection and shields are down. I'm not on TT Online, I downloaded the software. I'm on Windows, but my daughter had no trouble importing onto her Mac.   I'm out of ideas. I guess it's time to go manual.
