If any portion of fees paid relating to a continuing care community qualify as medical expenses, you would enter them in Deductions & Credits, under medical expenses.     If you, your spouse, or your dependent is in a nursing home or other facility primarily for medical care, then the entire nursing home cost (including meals and lodging) is deductible as a medical expense.   If the primary reason for entering the facility isn't to obtain medical care, only the portion of the fees directly spent on medical treatment are deductible. Meals and lodging wouldn't be deductible.   See this TurboTax Help Article for more information.   In addition, you would only be able to get a deduction for Medical Expenses if the total of the qualified expenses exceeds 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income. For example, if your AGI is $50,000, the first $3,750 of qualified expenses (7.5% of $50,000) don't count. You also need enough total itemized deductions to exceed your standard deduction.   See also this interactive interview Can I Deduct My Medical and Dental Expenses? at the IRS website. @user17723954851

Return to the entry screen for that 1099R and enter the number from Box 1 again in Box 16 for "state tax distribution".  You will do this on the federal entry areas under Wages and Income.  The DFAS 1099-R doesn't actually have a box 16 on it (which is why I imagine it wasn't entered) but you can safely put the federal  number in that space in TurboTax. Once you've updated that, you can retransmit the return.

Short version as noted: My daughter lives in DC but works in VA, and her employer withheld taxes in Virginia (she also had a two-week job in DC last summer, so there is some income taxed in DC. Using the "free online" version of TurboTax, I see that she will get all of the Virginia Tax refunded (over $2,600). BUT, I seem to have done something wrong because it says she only owes $13 to DC, and I know that cannot be right! I'm ready to start over from scratch, and I want to be sure I check the right boxes here!
In TurboTax, at the screen Tell us about the benefits you received, the text states:   If you have more than one (SSA-1099), add up the amounts for each box.   @cindy_ehlers

Hello.  TurboTax says that my Taxable income amount (6a) is about $60,000 less than the Social Security benefits that my wife and I received.  We file jointly. That seems like a big difference, to me.  TurboTax has checked and double checked everything and says we are ready to file, though.   Should I be worried? Thank you. John

@ user17723939869 wrote: I bought from SAMS club and I have my liscense code and received my verify 6 digit code and then everything just stops   Oh, wait.   What exact product did you buy from Sam's?   Sam's sells both the desktop product code and new for this year, they are now selling a code for the Online TurboTax website.  So when buying from Sam's,  you have to be careful which one you bought.    Since you said "download", I assumed that you purchased the desktop product from Sam's.      The activation code is a 16-digit code with a mix of numbers and letters, like this format XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.   Why are you mentioning a "verify 6-digit code" in this context?   I don't know what that refers to. Are you referring to a 2-factor sign-in code you receive when logging into your Intuit account as part of the activation process?  i.e., do you have 2-factor authentication set up for your Intuit Account, and a code is texted (or emailed) to you so you can log into your account?

Did you file for 2024 using TurboTax Online?  If so, when you click on My Tax Returns and Documents on the Tax Home page, and choose 2024, it will say you completed filing.  If so, when you start a 2025 return, your info will automatically transfer over.    If you used TurboTax Desktop, and are trying to upload your .tax2024 file to TurboTax Online for 2025, here's How to Transfer Last Year's Return to TurboTax Online.  If it didn't seem to transfer properly, you could open your 2024 program and re-save your completed return and transfer that file to TurboTax Online.    @john-ct

you should have a 1099-DIV from the brokerage where you hold this position and should be reporting that   For the US Gov % refer to the ishares tax supplement below tho yes shows 100% US Gov Obligations.  This would apply to the amount in your 1099-DIV Box 1a that comes from the TIP ETF, if you have other stuff in your account like a MM fund also paying dividends reported in Box 1a you have to calculate how much comes from TIP.  Same process for MM funds or other holdings, if applicable get the US Gov % from the fund company.   It will be exempt from State tax but not Federal tax.   https://www.ishares.com/us/literature/tax-information/2025-ishares-us-government-source-income-information-stamped.pdf
That’s disappointing. If not corrected soon I might just download the forms from the IRS and fill them out manually.

I was pleased to see the update, and options to enter all of my student's expenses on her tax return.  I now have a problem with the 1099-Q in the final document.  Even though I indicated through the questions that she (the taxpayer) WAS both who received the distribution and the beneficiary of the fund (twice!), the form checks the box #6, indicating that she was not.  This does not appear to impact her tax responsibility, but it is incorrect and does not match the actual 1099-Q.  Further, won't this be a flag to the IRS?  I know I can go into the forms and uncheck it, but 1) I should not have to  2) I read others mention that things they changed in forms did not carry to the final version that was submitted to the IRS.  I have gone through the entire process twice now with the same result.  I don't understand why this section is so problematic this year.

That is diabolical that Maryland changed their tax law to phase out the itemized deduction. We were forced to 'couple' our return to the Federal Return that resulted in having to pay more MD state taxes. Now that we get some Federal relief because of the increase in the SALT limit from 10,000 to 40,000, Maryland is penalizing us again. I need TurboTax to allow me to select between Standard or Itemized and generate a screen that says that I cannot Itemize even though I itemized on my Federal Return because I exceeded a threshold for my records.
Thank you so much for your expertise!
