I have the same situation and question, but I'm following up to ask whether I could enter my direct fed & state tax payments under the "Other Income Taxes Paid in 2025", "Withholding not entered on a W-2 or 1099". When I do that, the outcome seems to be the same - no penalty. But the guidance of AnnetteB6 makes me wonder if I am doing something wrong :(

Did your one W-2 that recorded your 2025 income also report income and withholding taxes for all three states? The income and withholding tax would have been recorded on multiple lines 15 through 17 at the bottom of the W-2. Please clarify. Other state income and tax summary is an Illinois full-year income tax form. The form will be used to compute your Illinois credit for taxes paid to another state. This form means that you have completed the Indiana and Ohio state income tax returns and state income tax balances have been computed. If your W-2 reports Indiana or Ohio withholding taxes, the withholding taxes should have flowed from your W-2 entry to the Indiana and Ohio income tax returns. If your W-2 did not report Indiana or Ohio withholding taxes, your Indiana and Ohio income tax returns will show a balance due. Do not make entries on Indiana IT-8453 or Ohio 1040. Please clarify whether and what withholding taxes were recorded on your W-2.

The educational expenses interview part in TT is terrible and easy to get confused or make an inadvertent mistake. The Room and Board enter will be part of the 1098T section and not the 1099Q part. This is what I do when I do this section. First I make sure this is the only thing I am going to work on. If you're doing other parts of your return, complete those, save the return, quit a restart. I will only do the 1099Q and 1098T, and if I believe I got everything right, I will save/quit and restart to give me a clean starting point to continue other items. If something looks wrong, I literally quit, do not save and restart the 1099Q and 1098T all over. First do the 1098T. I'll assume your 1098T is correct (what is reported for Tuition and Scholarships match what you paid / received in in 2025). Start by entering this exactly as shown on your 1098 into TT . In the education section on Deductions and Credits, select Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098T). You may get first window that tells you that you are not eligible for AOC/LLC, but still enter your expenses so your 1099Q is not taxed. you should then be able to get to a screen where you can either update your students 1098T info or add a new student if not in here. if your student shows up in the education summary, be sure to click the little pencil to edit and this will walk you through entering the 1098T details. if you need to add a student. click add new and it'll basically do the same thing. you then should get to a point where they ask you about schools - you can add a school or edit a previous year school -again if you need to edit and existing entry click the pencil. After answering all the questions about your 1098T details, then you'll get back to the summary screen of all your students 1098T's. if you have more than one, repeat by adding another. once you are done with all your 1098T info, click continue. This then takes you to the screen where it says time to enter your childs expenses and this now has the room and board added to it. Time to Enter XXX Educational Expenses Required Books Optional Books Other Course related mats Room and Board Computer software and internet Special needs. Complete this section and continue to finish the rest of the section. Make sure when you get to the ed summary page for your student you also click the pencil here and answer the questions about your student - this is an easy place to miss. If that works for you, then go enter your 1099Q and you should be good. One last tip - keep track of your refund/owed amount before you start. when you are done, if your 1099Q is all covered as you expect you will not see any changes in amount owed (you might get an AOC/LLC credit but thats a good thing).

We do not know who you are referring to---are you filing a joint tax return and referring to your spouse? Or to a dependent?
For disabled adults:
There is an extra amount added to your standard deduction if you are legally blind. Your federal return does not provide any other credits or deductions for saying you are disabled, with one possible exception.
There is a credit for the Elderly and Disabled which is so small that very few people benefit from it—-it has not been updated/increased by Congress for decades.
ELDERLY OR DISABLED CREDIT https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/do-i-qualify-for-the-credit-for-the-elderly-or-disabled
There are some states that provide various credits to elderly/disabled folks, so watch for that when you prepare your state return. The states that I know of that have anything for elderly/disabled are AZ, CT, DE, IA, MO, ND, NJ, NY, VE. There may be others.

It is better to make a QCD donation from your IRA instead of getting a regular charity deduction. You get an above the line deduction for it directly off your income and your AGI will be less. If you are 70 1/2 and made a QCD distribution from your Traditional IRA account…..it is not taxable. It will be entered as a IRA distribution on 1040 Line 4a but will as show zero taxable with QCD showing up by line 4b. It is not added on to Schedule A so you don’t need to itemize deductions to get credit for it. A QCD can only be made from an IRA. It can cover your RMD amount. After you enter form 1099-R keep going. If you have entered a birth date which makes you older than 70 1/2 there will be a page that asks Do any of these situations apply? Midway down is Were any of these funds sent directly to a charity? Then it will ask for the amount.

This has happened every year since I took my disaster distribution. Since this is my last year to repay the split payment I took the 2024 8915-f and fiddled around until 2025 TT filled out the form to match the 2024 version. It's not the form that's the problem, it's the incompetent programmers doing the code. That said, my income>1099-r line stills says "needs review" in green type no less but smart check says no errors. Intuit screwed up Quicken for years before spinning it off and it is much better for it and turbotax is much worse. If the company had devoted some of the millions they spent lobbying to kill the IRS Free File program TurboTax might be worth the money. As it stands it is not and I am done being ripped off.

Seems like both experts have different opinions. I am retired and have a W2 with imputed income in Boxes 1,3,5 for a life insurance policy paid for by the company I worked for that is taxable for Federal, Social, and Medicare. Can I use that to make an IRA contribution against. Thanks, Dave

Hello, I’ve been making some sculptures and some small jewelry to sell. I’ve been thinking about selling via consignment but I’m not sure if I would be taxed for it. There’s 3 sculptures and 4 sets of jewelry. The place I plan on selling by consignment has a 50% fee and my price is going to be 120$ for each individual sculpture, and 20$ per jewelry set. If everything were to be sold, it would total 420$ in net profit. However, because the consignment fee is 50%, the consignment shop and I get 210$ each. I’m in Texas, and from what I’ve seen, you pay federal income tax if you’ve made a total more than 400$. I’m a 20 y/o college student, this is the first time I’m ever doing something like this and I will not be doing it again for a long time. Additionally this is my only source of income. My question is, do I have to pay income tax (or any other kind of tax)?
