not familiar with how this is handled for CA but generally I don't think the state programs have a worksheet to drill down the state taxable amount, you should have a line somewhere for additions to Federal income that is taxable on your state return.   Tying it back to Federal depends the complexity of your situation and I use a spreadsheet offline to tie the net amount back to 1040 Line 2a in total and then the state breakdown, but it should include: 1099-INT Box 8 less Box 13 less any accrued interest adjustments plus 1099-DIV Box 12 amount for CA taxable bonds plus 1099-OID Box 11 less Box 6/10 or other adjustments   But there are a few issues to be aware of: 1. If you have adjustments (e.g. accrued interest paid on an individual bond) to a 1099 which has multiple income types (e.g. Box 1 or 3 as well as Box 8 ) then Turbo doesn't know which box to assign the adjustment to and will spread it across all of them.   you need to split the 1099 in this case to isolate the income box with the adjustment. 2. if you have premium adjustments and hold multiple state bonds some CA exempt and some CA taxable, again Turbo doesn't know from the 1099 how to assign the premium to CA or non-CA bonds.  The only way to get an accurate tax for CA is to split the 1099 between CA and non-CA bonds. 3. For 1099-DIV Box 12 if you provide a state breakdown, at least on Desktop (not sure Online) there is a bug where it can get stuck assuming the entire amount is CA exempt.  If you are not seeing CA tax go up when entering the 1099-DIV Box 12 state breakdown that usually means this is happening.  See here for this issue https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/taxes/discussion/re-how-to-enter-muni-bond-from-non-nys-sources-in-new-york-state-return/01/3888805#M1446487
Thank you. For the amount I report, since I don't remember a certain amount, should I make an estimate?

Filing as married filing separately on both federal and stat tax returns (California and Massachusetts - California resident). Turbotax is picking up my spouse's income on line A of MA Form 1 NR/PY (Easystep prompt asks for his income so entered that and it shows up in MA Info worksheet). But then getting a smart error on MA Form 1 as line 14f is greater than Line A due to inclusion of spouse's income. Seems like spouse's income should not be included in MA return given same filing status as federal. Turbotax will not allow manual override.  Is this a turbotax error or should spousal income be included in the MA return line A?

Do you have your new IP Pin to use for 2026? This number changes every year.     You can get an Identity Protection pin here, or if you lost your IP PIN, you can go here to Retrieve IP PIN.    Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:     Log in and open your return ("Take me to my return")  Once the return is open, then go to the Federal Taxes tab.  Subtab Other Tax Situations  Scroll down to Other Return Info.  Choose Identity Protection PIN and Start (or Revisit.)  Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"  Or another way:  Open your return if not already open.  ("Take me to my return.")  Once the return is open, click at the top on MY ACCOUNT, then choose TOOLS.  In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH.  Enter IP PIN without quotes.  In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO.  Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"      Here's how you can fix a reject:  Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button. Follow any “fix it” instructions to update the information causing the rejection.    Note: Not all rejections will have explicit guides to fix the information. You’ll need to navigate to the program area to address the cause of the rejection.    Time-saving Tip: If what you originally entered is correct, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, a dependent that's already been claimed, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return. This article will give you instruction on how to print and mail your return.    Additional reject instruction here.

To check on regular tax refund status via automated phone, call 800-829-1954.   Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities.  There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.   TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  “21 days”  is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.      First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:  https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/   Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.     You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2025 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:    https://www.irs.gov/refunds   To track your state refund:     https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/track-state-refund/L3jgO8PGs_US_en_US?uid=lt447ebr   If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing     https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/refunds-take-longer-others/L14YlqFrH_US_en_US?uid=lexdr7zh . https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/irs-refund-taking-longer-21-days/L2vRAJbdU_US_en_US?uid=lexe7lst         If you are getting earned income credit on line 27 or additional child tax credit on line 28 You are subject to the delay required by the PATH act.  Do not expect your refund before early March   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/internal-revenue-service/federal-refunds-delayed-due-path-act/L5jnQJsBi_US_en_US   Note:  “Accepted” is not the same as “approved”.  TurboTax tells you the e-file was accepted if the IRS deems that there is enough information on the return for them to take it in for processing.   Only the IRS can approve of the refund, which is a later stage of processing.  If the IRS approves your refund they will provide a date for the refund to be issued.   FROM THE IRS WHERE’S MY REFUND SITE: https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund How it works Where's My Refund shows your refund status: Return Received – We received your return and are processing it. Refund Approved – We approved your refund and are preparing to issue it by the date shown. Refund Sent – We sent the refund to your bank or to you in the mail. It may take 5 days for it to show in your bank account or several weeks for your check to arrive in the mail.

Try these steps: Find the screen where you entered your driver’s license information. Instead of editing the current entry, completely delete or clear all fields related to the license (or state ID). Click "Continue" or "Save" to proceed with the fields blank. Now, go back and re-add the driver’s license information fresh. Re-enter the Document Number slowly and verify every character matches. For the Document Number field, only enter the number of characters the software currently requests, not necessarily the whole number, if it is still specifically asking for a subset. Check your errors again.   See Sample Photo Documents
