On Form 1098‐T generated by the university, your GI Bill benefits applied to tuition, books and fees will be listed under Box 5 of the IRS Form 1098‐T.
Box 1 of the form are payments that you made yourself.
You need to have good records and not rely on the 1098-T, alone.
Box 1 of the 1098-T is for all the payments (for tuition and fees) received by the school, regardless of the source of those payments (money from you, scholarships, loans and/or VA benefits).
Box 5 is the money that was paid directly to the school by scholarships. Some schools include VA benefits (received directly from the VA) in box 5. Some don't. You're expected to know which, in your case.
If your VA tuition benefits were not included, in box 5, you enter them later, in the scholarships section which also has entry boxes for VA benefits and employer assistance, as well as scholarships. You're expected to know that amount from your own records. It would only be the amount in box 1, of the 1098-T, if VA benefits were the only money received by the school. You would not enter it again, if it was already include in box 5.
