First, you will want to wait until after Jan 31st as schools have until then to mail the Form 1098-T to you.

If you don't receive a Form 1098-T by Jan 31st, you can still enter your school expenses without a Form 1098-T.  The IRS does not explicitly require a Form 1098-T in order to claim any education-related credits.  However, you will need some sort of records in order to prove any expenses claimed such as canceled checks, receipts, a record of account, credit card statements, etc.

To enter the expenses, simply proceed with the education section of TurboTax as normal.

The easiest way to get to this section in TurboTax is to use the search feature.
  • Log into your account and click Take Me to My Return (you must click this before performing the search below)
  • Click the search icon (magnifying glass in top right-hand corner)
  • Search for "1098T" and click the "jump to 1098T" link that appears
  • This will bring you to the Education Expenses section where you can add a student and related Form 1098-T information
When you come to the screen asking if you received a Form 1098-T, simply answer “no” to that question and proceed with the rest of the interview.  You will be able to enter the amount of tuition and fees paid to the school.

You don't need a 1098-T if any of these apply:
1. If you or your dependent:
·         Haven't received the 1098-T by January 31, or by the date you file your return (whichever is later).
·         Requested the 1098-T from your school after January 31 but before filing your return.
·         Cooperated with the school's efforts to get the info necessary to send you the 1098-T.
2. If the school is not required to send a 1098-T.

Just make sure you have your education expenses and enrollment documented to take this credit using one of these exceptions.

As an addendum, the student can log into their online college account and go to their financial section to get financial details. But be careful here.
 - Qualified education expenses are claimed in the tax year they are paid. Doesn't matter what year is paid for either.
 - Scholarships/grants/529 funds are claimed as taxable income (initially) in the tax year they are received. Doesn't matter what year that money is for either.
So when looking at your financials on line, pay attention only to the date a payment for a class was applied, and ignore the start date of the class that payment was for.

I want to school back in 2021 and last year I filed my taxes before I was notified about a 1098-t form. I notified my cosmetology school that I went to ask if they can send me the form but they have yet to get back with me. Is there a way that I can receive that form outside of them and am I able to file it on my 2022 year tax return.

No.  You cannot add a 2021 tax document to a 2022 tax return. When/ If you obtain the document you can amend your 2021 tax return to include it.

I didn't receive a 1098-t, although I went to school last year. How do I claim what I paid?

Q.  Is there a way that I can receive that form outside of them?

A. No. If you have an online account with the school, you may be able to get it there.

Q. Am I able to file it (a 2021 1098-T) on my 2022 year tax return?

A. No, you must file an amended 2021 return to claim an education credit for your 2021 tuition.

You may be able to file without a 1098-T, if you know, for sure, your school is an "eligible institution".  When asked, in TT, if you have a 1098-T, answer no. Then answer yes to do you qualify for an exception.

To be eligible for the tuition credits, the course must be taken at "an eligible institution". The school should be able to tell you if it is an eligible educational institution. In general, an eligible educational institution is an accredited college, university, vocational school, or other postsecondary educational institution, including accredited, public, nonprofit, and proprietary (privately-owned, profit-making) postsecondary institutions. Additionally, in order to be an eligible educational institution, the school must be eligible to participate in a student aid program administered by the Department of Education. If they issue a 1098-T they are probably an eligible institution.

Enter your school at the link below, to see if it's on the dept. of education list.

Usually forms 1099-SSA, issued by the Social Security office get mailed out in January. If your form hasn't arrived yet, you should wait a couple of more weeks before contacting the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213.

If you attended school during 2024 and didn't get a Form 1098-T from your school, you can also call them to get a replacement.

I'm sorry to hear about your health issues and hope you get better.
