How to report a fellowship

Hello,

I’m a resident alien for tax purposes so it is my understanding that I have to file the 1040 form. In 2020 I received a fellowship for my graduate school which includes payment of tuitions and fees (which is not paid directly to me. Essentially I just don’t have to pay anything for tuitions) and a stipend. I received a W2 with the money I earned as stipend but not what I received as payment for my tuitions. Do I just need to report the W2 or do I need to add the tuition payments somehow?

How to report a fellowship

Yes, you will need to report your Form W-2.  You need to report the stipends that is reported on the W-2.  As IRS also receives a copy of your W-2 from your school, it is important to report that to match IRS record.

As far as your fellowship, you will enter it under the Form 1098-T section. Here are the steps:

In TurboTax online,

  • After sign into your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • At the right upper corner, in the search box , type in "1098t" and Enter
  • Select  Jump to form 1098T
  • Follow prompts
  • Tell the program you did not receive a Form 1098-T
  • Enter your tuition amount and the fellowship or scholarship amount with the same amount.
  • This will offset the transaction and you will not need to pay tax on it.
