I have scholarship/fellowship income that belongs on Schedule 1 line 8r from a postdoc that's an "educational experience" not employment. There are no tax documents generated; just a summary of stipend and health insurance payments.
If I enter it as "other" in less common income it gets input to line 8z. This means that it isn't counting as eligible income for IRA contributions even though it should be as a line 8r entry.
I assume that the way TurboTax allows this to be entered is buried somewhere inside of the education/1098-T module. The problem being that it doesn't progress that far once I enter that I wasn't a student. It terminates that module and directs you to the next one.

In TurboTax (TT), enter at:
- Federal Taxes tab (Personal in Home & Business)
- Wages & Income
Scroll down to:
-Less Common Income
-Click "Visit All". You'll eventually reach a screen to enter the scholarship amount.
Beginning with tax year 2022, it goes on line 8r of Schedule 1.
In past years, this entry method has only worked in desktop TurboTax (TT). If you are using TT Online (TTO) and it doesn't work, reply back for a workaround.
You might try the "up arrow" (I'm not familiar with TTO).
Otherwise, Here's the workaround:
In TurboTax Online (TTO), enter at:
Federal Taxes Tab
Deductions & Credits
-Scroll down to:
--Education Expenses and Scholarships
Answer Yes when asked if you attended college ( Lying to TurboTax to get it to do what you want does not constitute lying to the IRS). Go carefully thru the entire interview. You will eventually reach a screen that asks you to enter scholarship not shown on a 1098-T. When asked how much was used for room and board, enter the whole amount.
@Hal_Al I was able to get it added by telling TurboTax Online that I was a student then leaving everything else related to a 1098-T blank.
But that led to the same problem as here where the line 8r amount isn't counting as eligible taxable compensation for IRA contributions like it should. Is there an ETA on a fix?
Q. Is there an ETA on a fix?
A. No.
Even when they do fix it, it may be necessary to enter a bogus 1098-T in order to check the graduate student box.
