Hi thank you so much.
regarding the second question about if my son is independent on his taxes will he qualify for parents healthcare insurance as a dependent. You said that this was not something that would probably be able to answered.
I’m embarrassed to say that I have not figured out how to get to where I can just put in my question as a post…. I was going to try and see if anybody could answer the question and you had suggested doing a general post but I’ve been up all night trying to figure out how to do it!! I did it once before but now I can’t find how are you get to doing a general post I get to a spot where you can search for stuff that was already posted and replied to but not where I can ask a question. Can you explain to me how I do that and where I go on the site because I can’t figure it out and I’m also doing this from my phone so I don’t know if that makes a difference
At the home screen, there are 10 pictures, with categories, such as "Get your taxes done", "Education", etc. Click on the one that best fits you question (it doesn't much matter, they all get looked at by the experts).
On the next screen, near the top, under the category, there will be a white box "Search a topic or keyword" and a blue box "Ask a question". Click on ask a question.
Oh my i’m sorry but how do I get to the home screen the only place I got you that had like nine boxes didn’t have Education and I know that that’s one of the topics that had credit score group stuff like that I didn’t have the topic of education so I don’t think I was in the right spot how do I get to the home screen I’m sorry I should really know how to do this
This is how I get there:

Turbotax is it asking if My son received letters 6475 for the stimulus of $1400. Because He filed that he could be claimed on somebody else’s taxes even though he wasn’t he was not eligible for the $1400 but then when I filed taxes the next year - which I don’t need to file but the only reason why I filed was it said that’s the only way to get the $1400 for my dependent so I filled out my taxes I put him down as a dependent and I got the $1400 for him and the letter I got stated that I had received I think $2800 … but my son received none and he did not get a letter and the question and Turbotax asks if the $1400 matches the amount that he got in letter 6475 but he never got a letter but I got a letter Dated January 18, 2022 with that form number in the amount of $2800 for the 2021 economic impact payment… but the question in Turbotax is asking my son if he received the letter because he’s eligible for the $1400. Since he’s filing independent does that mean he gets this $1400 even though I got $2800 the question says does this match the amount on your letter is 6475 so do I answer yes or do I answer no…. It’s very confusing I don’t know if it matters that he went from dependent to independent and now he qualifies to get it even though I got it because I claimed him as my dependent also Turbotax is saying that I should’ve received a letter between March and May 2021 but it’s dated January 18, 2022 so am I possibly looking at the wrong letter it says 2021 economic impact maybe I got the payment but I didn’t get the letter until January 18, 2022 but regardless do I answer the question yes or no if I answer the question yes then he doesn’t get the 1400 if I say no but he’s not supposed to get it and then he gets a bigger refund with it then that’s gonna be a mess with the IRS so I don’t know how to answer it… And I’m reading the question again it says does this match the amount on your letter 6475 but it doesn’t it says that he’s eligible for $1400 but the letter says $2800 and the letter is to me not to him
Thank you I just sent you something about the stimulus $1400 - if my son is eligible to get that his refund goes way up. I sent a separate post about that but now I have two other issues
I went through the review and it says that I have to check an entry for form W-4 tax payer pay frequency must be entered my son worked an internship it was three months during the summer I have no idea how we got paid is there anyway to leave that blank the options are weekly biweekly semi monthly monthly quarterly or semi annual buddy works three months and I have no idea how often he gets paid since he’s not working all year is there a way I can leave this blank without screwing up the taxes ?
Also I have the CD desktop version and people are posting that there’s a message that a filing closed on October 15 and then somebody said there was a message that there was gonna be an update and lots of people are complaining that the e-filing isn’t working and I had all this done in April I was waiting for my kids father to get back to me… What do I do if I can’t manage to e-file
@lcolantuoni14 If he is under the age of 26 he can be on your employer's plan even if you do not claim him as a dependent on your tax return.
However, he may be able to get his own health insurance at little or no cost depending on his income, He should check out the state Marketplace Exchange where he lives or go to healthcare.gov for information - https://www.healthcare.gov/
There seems to be some fuzziness over duplication of the $1400 stimulus. I'm of the opinion that your son should not claim it on his tax return, since you already received it. In Turbotax, he should indicate that he already received the $1400 even though he didn't actually get a 6475 letter.
For background, see this previous discussion, on the subject: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-credits-deductions/discussion/3rd-stimulus-dependent-eligibili... , which includes this detail from the law:
The 2021 Recovery Rebate (third stimulus) is in Section 9601 (Subtitle G) of the new law (American Rescue Act?) and creates Tax Code section 6428B.
Subsection (h) says:
‘‘(h) REGULATIONS.—The Secretary shall prescribe such regulations or other guidance as may be necessary or appropriate to carry out the purposes of this section, including— ‘‘(1) regulations or other guidance providing taxpayers the opportunity to provide the Secretary information sufficient to allow the Secretary to make payments to such taxpayers under subsection (g) (including the determination of the amount of such payment) if such information is not otherwise available to the Secretary, and ‘‘(2) regulations or other guidance to ensure to the maximum extent administratively practicable that, in determining the amount of any credit under subsection (a) and any credit or refund under subsection (g), an individual is not taken into account more than once, including by different taxpayers and including by reason of a change in joint return status or dependent status between the taxable year for which an advance refund amount is determined and the taxable year for which a credit under subsection (a) is determined.
There is no need for your son to be doing the W-4 section of TurboTax. That is optional. The W-4 is not part of the tax return filing. It's something you give your employer. Just type in anything to move along.
I suspect TT will have the efiling glitch fixed soon, if it even exists (this is the first I'm hearing of it). Otherwise, you will have to print and mail.
I’ll say it’s fuzzy - I did not understand when you cut and pasted it was in language that was difficult to understand I don’t know if it’s the law or where it came from I did see some thing about at the end each person getting one but when I read through all the other comments I even saw one from you that said your son received $1400 through you and $1400 himself and other people are saying the same and are not returning them. There’s a note on the Turbotax screen that says like with a little yellow yield sign the IRS could lower your refund after you file if the information you provide here doesn’t match IRS records…. and from what I read people are saying that at least in the past they didn’t have good records and they were letting double payments go…. Turbotax really doesn’t have it where did very well because I read this that no my son didn’t get the letter that said $1400 but yes I know I put him down as a dependent to get his $1400…. What is the difference between this and what everybody else was talking about
also I have a Nother big problem I can’t find my spreadsheet that I did for the 1098T on my computer and I need to get into the 1098T and look at it and like re-create it so I can see if there’s additional things I can deduct but I cannot find it and I read in the community to search - Oh wait a minute I found the search button and I’m so inapt that I didn’t know it jump to mend so I seem to have found it although unfortunately - there’s only one total line for bugs and materials required to be purchased from the school and then one that says books and materials not required to be purchased from the school oh I’m very confused because I’m also reading at the top that says you may also include room and board if the expenses are paid using the qualified education savings oh boy that’s very confusing as well I know I had put a spreadsheet together with books and computer but it appears it he got lumped together… Is there any way to put in separate line items that get added together or I had to figure it out and then add it back in and put it all together in one lump sum of additional books and materials required
Thanks - He’s slipping through the cracks of New Jersey family care and the marketplace… Be more specific he said that he could get on my employer plan even if I don’t claim him as a dependent but what if he does not check the box that he can be claimed as a dependent and he files as independent if he files as independent will he qualify for my employer health plan? Thanks so much
Also regarding the stimulus if we are incorrect and he actually can get it would I be able to amend my taxes because I doubt you can get it after the fact but if I put down that he did not receive the letter and they send it when I be audited or would I get in trouble or what I just have to return the payment because people are also saying there’s no way to return the payment but they can adjust the refund ? So other people actually received it and didn’t have to send it back I would be having them fill it out to get it and if the IRS doesn’t think he should have it then they will just adjust the refund which really isn’t a refund it looks like a refund because I paid estimated taxes and paid his taxes already in April - now I’m filing and I’m finding all kinds of questions this doesn’t seem clear to me with the directions from Turbotax and the whole 1098T thing you said you don’t have to use those exact numbers but it gets sent to the IRS I’ll have to see if I can go onto the Student account and find an add stuff up but that will take a while and I’m getting nervous that I might have a problem the filing and I have two other sets of taxes to still do! I was just supposed to be reviewing this one
i’m not sure if you got this because in my email it said there was a problem with delivery with Gmail and TurboTax and that they will try for 45 hours to resend but I don’t know if that was something I was supposed to receive from Turbotax that might’ve had an answer from somebody or if it was something I sent like this so I’m resending this but if you sent anything and responded my email said some thing was either not sent or was not received usually I receive stuff in my email that’s how I know I’m getting stuff from you ….. But this was my response about that stimulus payment it sure is pretty fuzzy-And now when I go into it if I’m pressed yes it did nothing but if I said no then the refund went up $1400 but it’s not doing it now whether I click yes or no the refund stays the same so I don’t know if there’s something going on with Turbotax
Now I’m reading more information in Turbotax the little on demand tax guide and says even though you don’t have to repay any stimulus over payments you still have to enter the exact amount you receive if you enter less than what you received and it doesn’t match IRS records the IRS will adjust your return after you file this could me and you’ll get a lower refund or all more in taxes and with TurboTax told you when you filed… Oh my gosh now it’s saying to go to your online account to check but My son does not have an online account because you need to have a credit card and all this stuff that he should have that he doesn’t have to create an online account I think you even have to have your phone registered to yourself versus like a family plan and so we can go on and check this is a real bummer. It says the amount that’s listed needs to match wits on the letter but the amount that’s listed is 1400 and the letter says 2800 and it came to me
