1098-T Form Exception

My employer fully paid for a 6 months bootcamp that I attended. Since the tuition was more than 5,250 I am trying to get the Lifetime Learning Credit.

I talked to one of the representatives at my tuition assistance program and asked if they issue a 1098-T, her answer was "the boot camp is a certificate program that does not meet the academic credit regulations required by the IRS for us to issue the 1098-T form."

Could I qualify for a 1098-T form exception?

1098-T Form Exception

Q. Could I qualify for a 1098-T form exception?

A. Yes, if the school is an "eligible institution".

To be eligible for the tuition credits, the course must be taken at "an eligible institution". The school should be able to tell you if it is an eligible educational institution. In general, an eligible educational institution is an accredited college, university, vocational school, or other postsecondary educational institution, including accredited, public, nonprofit, and proprietary (privately-owned, profit-making) postsecondary institutions. Additionally, in order to be an eligible educational institution, the school must be eligible to participate in a student aid program administered by the Department of Education.

Enter your school at the link below, to see if it's on the dept. of education list.

1098-T Form Exception

Yes you may qualify for an exception.  One of the requirements for the lifetime learning Credit is that classes that lead to a certificate program will qualify for the credit. I have included a screenshot on what the exceptions should look like below.

As Hal_Al has mentioned above, the school does need to be approved by the Dept of Education.  When you fill out the school information, it will need to have an address and EIN ( Filers Federal ID No). You may find it in the sources that Hal listed or you may need to go to the school's website to retrieve that information.
