There is a known issue when using TurboTax Online that is related to the program asking you to double-click to link to Schedule C.  Take a look at the TurboTax article below and use the link in the article to enter your email address to be notified once this is resolved.

Why can't I link my 1099-NEC in TurboTax Online?

Alternatively, take a look at the additional information below for a possible series of steps to solve the issue.  If you do try to solve it, please let me know if these steps worked for you.

Since income reported on Form 1099-NEC needs to be reported on Schedule C, the program is trying to tie these two forms together to be sure that it is reported correctly and on the right form.

Try going back to the section where you entered the Form 1099-NEC if you entered it on its own and delete that entry.  Use these steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-NEC” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-NEC
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-NEC” link

This will bring you to the summary of all Form 1099-NEC that you have entered.  Click Delete or the trash can icon next to each one.

Next, you will re-enter the Form 1099-NEC as part of the Schedule C so that the income is reported directly as part of your Business Income and Expenses.

Use these steps to go to the Schedule C section of your return.  If you do not have a Schedule C yet, follow the steps on the screen to get started.

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “schedule c” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to schedule c
  • Click on the blue “Jump to schedule c” link

If you already have a Schedule C in your return, edit it and go to the section to Add Income.  This is where you will re-enter the Form 1099-NEC.

If you do not already have a Schedule C in your return, follow the prompts and enter the information about your work/business for which you received the Form 1099-NEC.  Then continue through that section to Add Income and enter the Form 1099-NEC plus any other income you received for that self-employed business.

Don't forget you can also claim expenses related to your business.

After you are finished, the error condition should be eliminated.

I followed your instructions and it did not solve my problem.  I am still unable to fix to submit my return.  I have a call tomorrow from a turbo tax rep its at my 4:30 am Central so I am not to happy about that.

It is a known issue and is being worked on.  If you are experiencing this issue, please sign up here for email updates as we are working on the issue.   E-filed returns won't start being accepted and processed until Feb 12th.   If you use the sign-up link, you will be notified when it has been resolved and then you will be able to submit the return.   In the meantime, you can get all of your business expenses reported to ensure you are not over-paying any tax.

If it's directly related to the work you do, you can deduct it as an expense.  Work-related expenses reduce your taxes by lowering the amount of self-employment income you get taxed on. For example, if you made $50,000 in self-employment income and had $5,000 out-of-pocket expenses, you'd only get taxed on $45,000.  For state-specific questions regarding your work, click here to find your state’s Department of Revenue.

I'm having a similar issue but I don't see anything about a 1099-NEC.

I'm being asked to enter Misc. Expences Other into the field for one of my businesses.

First off, TurboTax really needs to fix the issue with the very narrow form that you have to scroll through.

It's nearly impossible to figure out where to find what you're looking for.

If I understand correctly, it wants me to enter the number on that form into the little field under "Check this entry." Is that right? If so, if the number is already there, why am I entering it into the field on top?

(I couldn't see how to start a new topic so I'm jumping on this thread.)
