Why can't I e-file my 2020 amended return? The system says "Amended returns cannot be electronically filed." This is incorrect.

The IRS allows e-filing of amended returns now. Why won't TurboTax allow me to do this?

Those instructions don't seem to help. TurboTax never gives me the option to e-file.

The ability to e-file an Amended return for 2020, closed in October 2021. The reason is because, after e-filing shuts down for the current tax year, we're working hard to get things ready for the upcoming tax year. You will be able to e-file your Amended 2021 return, this year.

@c2w-mfc Only an amended 2021 return can be e-filed using TurboTax.  If you amended 2020 or some earlier year, you have to print sign and mail in the amended return.    Some paid preparers who are using professional tax software can e-file a 2020 amended return but you cannot do so using TurboTax.

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six to nine  months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:
