The IRS does not operate on first in, first out. So it's not unusual to have someone get their return before you get yours. If there is something wrong with your return, the IRS will mail you a letter explaining what's wrong. Otherwise, you will need to continue checking your status at www.irs.gov/refunds. Once 21 calendar days have passed since your return was accepted, you can reach out to the IRS to inquire about the status of your return and ask for an update. If you call any sooner they will most likely tell you to call back after 21 days. Please click here for contact information.
Did you go all the way through the File tab, through the 3 steps and hit the big orange Transmit Returns Now button?
You can check your efile status here
https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/
When you efile you get back 2 emails. The first email only confirms the transmission. The second email says if the IRS (or state) Accepted or Rejected your efile.
When you log into your account you should also see the status and if it was Accepted or Rejected, Started, Printed, Ready to Mail, etc. What does it say?
By the way, if your friend did not include all his W2s on the same tax return he will have problems. Eventually the IRS will send him a letter and probably a bill for the missing income.
