If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 16 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.
Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.

This person had the correct answer, but it has changed slightly. Now it is moved back to 3/28:
Moved up to March 18 from March 25.
I submitted my return with a child tax credit that I mistakenly added. Now my son cannot file until I amend my return because his return says no one can claim him. Do you have a suggestion for amending my return ASAP so my son can file before April 15?
I have also made the changes on my forms for the amendment as Turbo Tax suggested. Do I need to go back and redo everything to be the original?
the quickest way is to wait until TurboTax releases the 1040X, and e-file. If you try to do the paper route on the IRS site, it will be bogged down. I have a similar situation, and have been waiting for this form to be released. Although I really don't get why TurboTax is taking so long to release a form that the IRS has offered on their site for weeks now. Hopefully on March 18th, we will all have it uploaded to our software and can continue with our amendments.
If you already claimed the child on your return then they MUST mail in a return no matter when or if you ever amend your return. They can file now ... they do not need to wait on you.
Even if the IRS accepts the amended return?
Yes. Once a ssn has been used and entered into the IRS computers you can't efile it again even if the first return is amended. It won't clear it. So they don't have to wait to file since they have to mail their return.
Thank you
First, make sure you really need to amend and that your 2020 return was accepted in TurboTax Online or paper-filed through the mail. You can't amend a return that hasn't been filed yet.
IRS Form 1040-X (amend your return) will be ready on March 25, 2021. Sign up for email notification and we'll let you know when the most current form is available.
When you're ready to amend, find your situation below and follow the instructions.
According to the IRS.gov site, The Form 1040X IS available now (and amendments can be filed electronically for 2019 and 2020 returns). When will Turbo Tax update their program to allow amendments to be filed?
