After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.
See this IRS website for federal tax refund FAQ's - https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions
If over 21 days since being Accepted by the IRS and the tax refund is still Processing you can call the IRS and speak with an IRS agent concerning your tax refund.
Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Then press 4 for personal or individual tax questions.
It should then transfer you to an agent.
So I made an account to see my account transcripts and this message came out on my irs account.
Your 2019 Tax Return Has Not Been Processed
If you've already filed, processing usually takes 21 days (electronic returns) or six weeks (paper returns).
If you still need to file, submit your tax return along with any payment due by April 15, 2020to avoid potential penalties and interest. If you've been affected by a recent disaster, learn about the most recent tax relief provisions to know your options.
I did look at the actual account transcripts and there is nothing on there besides a date that says “as of” March 23, 2020. A few days ago it said March 16, 2020
What number did you call if you dont mind me asking?
I called every tax number but didnt nobody answer
I filed mine January 23rd, if you are like me and filed an EIC OR Child Credit, they don't even touch your return until February 15th, and from then it's 21 business days from then. So for all of us who filed early if you used either credit your tax returns weren't even touched until February 15th. For me 21 business days puts me on st Patrick's day for you it would be somewhere around the 25th of this month. If you used credit that is. If not and 6 weeks goes by you have to contact IRS and report problem. Hope that helps you
[phone number removed] Why? What number are you supposed to use?
I filed electronically and got accepted feb 13th 2020 turbo tax and direct deposit. And my status still says the same thing!!! And I didn’t receive no letter and I do my taxes the same every year and never had a problem! 🤬 everything the web says is contradicting.
How do you know this information?
In my experience it means that you will need to do an identification with them. Either call a number amd they will ask you questions or you will have to take your ID to an office so they can confirm its you. I had to to ID verification 2 years ago
Filed 2/7 & got accepted 30 mins later the same day. Filed with EITC.
2/23 the bars disappeared. Refund amount & Tax code 152 is still there..
Called the IRS 2/26 & was told I hadn't hit my 21st day yet so I couldn't get any info. He also told me to call back on 2/28 which was a Saturday (His words) but they were closed on weekends so try back again Weds March 4th.. I didn't even think the 28th was Friday. That would made it my 22nd day. He also told me to keep checking WMR daily for an update.
UPDATE: Called back 3/2/20 was told we're under review because our income didn't watch what the IRS has. They told me they couldn't verify one of my husband w2s.
Applied & spoke to a tax advocate specialist and was told to send in a letter from the employer to the IRS. Faxed it & was told they couldnt use it. Had to send in his last paystub on 3/10/20.
Transcripts say processing date of 3/16/20. Tax Advocates says if everything works out she will be in contact again 3/26/20. I have an est completion date: 4/23/20.
Still no letters in the mail.. Just waiting!
State finally processed & was sent via paper check today 3/12/20.. Fingers crossed that our federal is right behind! 🤞🏼
@Jd0924 hello, do you remember what number you called? I've been having a hard time trying to contact somebody. It is just an automated system. Thank you.

🤦🏼♀️
@Lalaa2268 Unfortunately, many people are experiencing this long delay for their tax returns. The IRS started processing returns later than in prior years and as such has a backlog to work through. They also just recently started processing returns claiming EIC and/or ACTC.
During processing, the government reviews your refund. During the review process, they look for math errors on your return (extremely rare in TurboTax) and they also check if you owe back taxes, unpaid child support, or other debts.
If they need to make any corrections, they may offset (reduce) your refund. In some cases, the correction might even increase your refund.
Once that part's done, the government approves your refund, which means it's ready to be deposited or sent. At that point the IRS site will update with a direct deposit date.
