My tax return says I am doing standard deduction when I am actually doing itemized.

The standard deduction nearly doubled to $12,000 filing single/$24,000 married filing jointly for 2018. Until your enter enough itemized deductions to go over those amounts, the program will choose the standard deduction for you automatically because it offers the most tax benefit. Many taxpayers that itemized in the past are now taking the standard deduction.
