Tax returns

Did you e-file your tax return and was it accepted?
Only the IRS and your State control when and if a Federal or State tax refund is Approved and Issued.

You complete your tax return by finishing all 3 Steps in the File section. In Step 3, to e-file your tax return, you must click on the large Orange button labeled "Transmit my returns now".

After completing the File section and e-filing your tax return you will receive two emails from TurboTax. The first email when your tax return was transmitted and the second email when the tax return has either been accepted or rejected.

Note - Once a tax return has been Accepted by the IRS or a State, TurboTax receives no further information concerning the tax return or the status of any tax refund.  Only the taxpayer listed on the tax return can obtain the status of a tax refund or a tax return.

To check the status of an e-filed return, open up your desktop product or log into your TurboTax Online Account. You can find your status within the TurboTax product.
If accepted by the IRS use the federal tax refund website to check the refund status - https://www.irs.gov/refunds
If accepted by the state use this TurboTax support FAQ to check the state tax refund status - https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899433-how-do-i-track-my-state-refund

After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.
See this IRS website for federal tax refund FAQ's - https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions
If over 21 days since being Accepted by the IRS and the tax refund is still Processing you can call the IRS and speak with an IRS agent concerning your tax refund.
Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.

Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 4 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.

Turbo Tax only gives you an estimated date. The IRS usually pays most refunds within 21 days. But these are not normal times. This year is taking the IRS longer to send the refunds. There are millions more people filing returns to get the Stimulus payment.

As of May 15, 2021, we had 300,000 individual tax returns received prior to 2021 in the processing pipeline. Including current year returns, as of May 15, 2021, we had 16.4 million unprocessed individual returns in the pipeline. Unprocessed returns include those requiring correction to the Recovery Rebate Credit amount or validation of 2019 income used to figure the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC). This work does not require us to correspond with taxpayers but does require special handling by an IRS employee so, in these instances, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue any related refund. If, as a result, a correction is made to any RRC, EITC or ACTC claimed on the return, the IRS will send taxpayers an explanation. Taxpayers are encouraged to continue to check Where’s My Refund? for their personalized refund status and can review Tax Season Refund Frequently Asked Questions.

Tax returns

Same. I filed on March 16th. I have contacted the IRS and advocacy center numerous times. No one has answers. I even contacted my congressmen's office. Again no one knows why. They are saying it should have not taken over 30 days even though I never got a stimulus.

Tax returns

You want to know WHY the IRS is taking so long to process returns?

It is because congress has reduced the IRS budget every year for at least a decade so they have to do more with less which now means it takes much much longer than a normal tax year... here are some of the things the IRS is having to deal with this year which are  not normal:

1) continuing covid restrictions causing  staffing/logistical  issues including how to handle all these situations..

2) 2019 ( and earlier) returns that have still not been processed from last year + the new ones  that have been added this tax season

3) Late 2020 tax law changes which required form/programming changes in January  + a second stimulus payment be issued  which also needs to be double checked against the stimulus credit taken on the return

4) Mid 2021  tax law changes some of which were retroactive to the 2020 return which required redoing the forms/programming yet again  which prompted the IRS to have to process more than 16 million returns a second time

5)while also issuing a third stimulus payment AND recalculating a PLUS UP if needed on those returns that are filed after the third payment went out

6) all while using aging  computer systems that are 5 years or older (ancient in computer time)

7) and while not having the ability to hire  and train  temporary staff fast enough   (they hire thousands of temps every year which were laid off last year due to covid and have not returned because they make more sitting at home collecting unemployment )

😎and more returns than normal have been filed this year to date  which in and of itself is enough to bogged down the system.
