“Tax expert” gave wrong information.

I spoke with turbo tax expert about when status I should file under and was told that if my dependent worked at all in 2023 I couldn’t claim HOH. Yes I could. He worked for three months and I paid 100% of living costs.  Now I owe the IRS instead of getting a refund after only making $2700.00 last year. They told me there’s nothing I can do even though the irs isn’t open.

Your post is confusing.   Did you already e-file?   If you already e-filed then you have to wait until the IRS starts to accept/reject returns on January 29.   If you have a mistake and the IRS rejects the return you can fix it and re-file.   If they accept it, then you have to wait for it to be fully processed and then amend.

Who is your dependent?   Provide some details about the dependent (not his name or SSN---details about his age, student status, how much he earned, etc.)

Who earned $2700?  You?  Or the dependent?

Apparently the issue is whether you could claim a qualifying dependent for Head of Household filing status?

Am I Head of Household?

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.

Yes I did efile and I read through all of those and I found it vague so I decided since I’m paying for tax experts I’d ask and she flat out lied to me. My question isn’t how to fix it because I know that. My question is what’s the point of paying someone to help you with a service when not only do they not give you correct information, they end up costing you hundreds of dollars and when you complain about the service you paid for and didn’t get all you hear is, “well it’s too late.”, like you just said lol. I’m never using turbo tax again

You did not answer questions that were asked.   We still do not know who the dependent was or how much they earned.   You have not provided any information here that would allow us to help figure out if the dependent would have been a qualifying dependent to let you file as HOH.

If a mistake or misunderstanding occurred, you can re-file if the e-file is rejected, or amend your return after it has been fully processed if the IRS accepts it.

You said "I'm paying for tax experts" ---- did you use one of the online "Live" versions that provided one on one expert help?

I'm sorry that happened to you.   I had two "experts" give me incorrect advice.  I confirmed with a CPA in both cases that the information was incorrect.   Turbotax is a mess this year.
