Hello, it has been almost 2 months since my federal return has been accepted. I received my return about 3 weeks after I filed, but it was short $1400. I have tried for weeks to get in contact with the IRS and have not been able to get ahold of anyone. I have also contacted TurboTax and they were unable to tell me anything regarding my account. I would like this resolved!!!

Exactly $1400?
LOTS of people have made mistakes this year with the recovery rebate credit by "forgetting" that they received the $1400 per person stimulus checks last year. They answered no to the questions for the recovery recovery rebate credit and put the $1400 per person on line 30 of their returns. But you cannot get it twice, so the IRS removes it when it is there by mistake.
Try checking your online account with the IRS
https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account
Does the IRS show that you received a $1400 stimulus or EIP check in 2021? Did you receive it? When you were asked on your tax return did you say no? Was there $1400 on line 30 of your tax return?
If the IRS says you got $1400 last year but you did not receive it you can have it traced.
LOST THIRD STIMULUS CHECK
In this public forum, we cannot diagnose why your refund has been reduced. For additional information, please see this TurboTax help article: Why is my refund direct-deposit or check lower than the amount in TurboTax?
I received a letter in the mail this year stating that I was to receive the 3rd stimulus check.
@baileyw Was it letter 6475? Look in the bottom corner of the letter. It tells you to enter on your tax return whether you received the 3rd stimulus check last year. If you received the 3rd stimulus you cannot get it again. If you did NOT get it then you can use the recovery rebate credit on your 2021 tax return to get the credit.
Check your bank account----did you receive a deposit or check for $1400 per person sometime after mid-March last year?
I only received the first and second economic impact payments. The second one was issued after I did my 2020 taxes so I received that payment a few weeks after I did my return. I have not received a 3rd payment. I just wish I could talk to someone from the IRS because this is so confusing!
This is what is says when I try to track my refund. I did not file as a dependent in 2020 or 2021, and my income is less than 75,000.
“We changed the amount claimed as Recovery Rebate Credit on your tax return. The error was in one or more of the following: The Social Security number of one or more individuals claimed as a qualifying dependent was missing or incomplete. The last name of one or more individuals claimed as a qualifying dependent does not match our records. One or more individuals claimed as a qualifying dependent exceeds the age limit. Your adjusted gross income exceeds $75,000 ($150,000 if married filing jointly, $112,500 if head of household). The amount was computed incorrectly.“
If your refund is short $1,400 then the IRS has records that show you were sent the 3rd stimulus payment so they removed the $1,400 Recovery Rebate Credit that was entered on Form 1040 Line 30.
Go to this IRS website for your tax account to see if the 3rd stimulus payment is entered - https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account
If you checked your bank account in the March - May 2021 timeframe and there is not a $1,400 EIP3 payment from the IRS then go to this IRS website for how to start a trace on the payment - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/questions-and-answers-about-the-third-economic-impact-payment-topic-j-p...
Thank you so much. One last question, before I entered anything regarding the economic impact payment- my refund was supposed to be over $1000. I now know I don’t qualify for the 3rd stimulus because I already got it. Can I amend my return to get the full amount I was supposed to?
@baileyw There is no need to amend your tax return since the IRS will adjust your tax return accordingly. The IRS will remove the $1,400 for the Recovery Rebate Credit and you will receive the remaining tax refund less the credit. However, since the IRS had to change your tax return the refund may be delayed by several weeks maybe longer.
I received $465, and with the credit it was $1865. However before I even put anything in regarding the recovery rebate credit my refund was supposed to be $1100. Will I be getting that extra 650$ back or am I SOL?
