Is it just me or has anyone else come to realize that when you see that a return has been “Accepted” by the IRS and the amount of refund is proudly displayed in your App, webpage, whatever; it really means NOTHING?
I’ve recently discovered that that status is about as informative as a read receipt for an email. It tells you nothing but that the data is now on another server.
Not one **bleep** thing more.
Apparently, the poor corporate managers at the starving not-for-profit company of Intuit are so desperate for any scrap of money they can get that pulling this kind of snake oil, used car sales, predatory, reptilian tactic is required.
And I’m sure that I’m to blame for not knowing this, of course. I clicked “I Accept” on the EULA or the terms or whatever gets the lawyers all wet when they think about how they’re shafting another 10 million average joe schmucks out of their $50 or $100 bucks. I had the opportunity to pay more (twice as much) to have actual CPAs check the math. It’s my greed and lust that caused me to miss all the numerous and obvious warnings that I might get denied the amount of refund I was expecting to get (because that’s what the application kept parading in front of my greedy eyes.
It is really pathetic. It means nothing in the long run and certainly nothing to you, Intuit. It was my mistake to count on that amount of money to be used on getting a car so that I can work my plebeian job, to keep my dinky little home. I’m really not worth the trouble of being even SLIGHTLY more transparent about the actual meaning of a status indicator for my measly little refund.
I mean seriously, so I only got $1400 of the $4300 I greedily expected to actually get. And which is still prominently displayed every. single. time. I log into your product.
I deserve what I get if I actually believe a company might not con me out of another $50 without a thought. They’re struggling here folks. There are so many other competitors in this market, oh wait….
Great job Intuit! You really do yourself and basically all greedy capitalists a fine example of what it is all about.
Putting one more nail in the coffin of the idea of a thriving, happy middle class in this country. Or happiness itself, for that matter.
And the great thing is it’s all our fault!

slow down, partner......
Intuit is not the IRS.....
The refund Intuit promotes is predicated upon YOUR data entry. It assumes you have entered everything correctly and it matches the IRS records. For example, you enter that you did not receive the 3rd stimulus payment, but what Intuit can't know is that the IRS say you did - again an example - your refund will be adjusted by the IRS.
'accept' is no different that the mail room at the IRS signing for the incoming mail in a physical world. That is IRS nomenclature and not Intuit saying the IRS has agreed to refund what you calculated using Intuit software.
but you are correct that the refund displayed by Intuit means nothing until the IRS validates what YOU entered into the Intuit software is accurate and matches the IRS records. so slow down and let the IRS do its work - the letter will explain why they disagreed with you.
What did the IRS change on your return? Turbo Tax is a self prepared return and doesn't know if you left something out or entered a wrong amount, etc. Turbo Tax just guarantees the calculations are right based on your entries.
Accepted does not mean Approved.
Accepted only means the IRS verified some basic info on it so they know it's really from you. After it is Accepted the IRS processes it then approves it before they send the refund.
After Turbo Tax sends your return they are done with their part. Now it's up to the IRS to process and Approve it. It has nothing to do with Turbo Tax. The IRS doesn't update Turbo Tax with the status of your return. Turbo Tax just gives you an estimated date.
What does Accepted mean

What happens after your return is accepted
And after the fees were deducted it looks like the difference is about 2800?
2,800 is the 3rd Stimulus payment. Did you already get the Stimulus payment they sent out last year starting March 2021? The IRS has records that show you were sent the 3rd stimulus payment so they removed the 2,800 Recovery Rebate Credit.
Do you have an amount on 1040 line 30? You might have tried to claim it again. Line 30 is only if you didn't get the full amount or qualify for more.
Did you get IRS letter 6475 saying what they sent you? If you didn't get the IRS letter 6475 saying what they sent you then Double check your bank statements and check your IRS account to see what they sent you. Check both IRS accounts if married.
