I made a huge mistake. I completely forgot I worked at a job from Jan-Apr 2021 and filed my taxes for my current job. Then after I filed my tax return/form showed up in the mail and I was unable to file it. How can I file this other tax return? I've already received the refund for my first return.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You said above that your first return has already been filed and processed and that you have even received your refund. So now to add another W-2 or to make any sort of correction/addition to your 2021 tax return you have to prepare and file a Form 1040X----that is an amended return.
Going forward--next year wait for all of your tax documents and do not file your 2022 tax return until you have all of them to put on the same tax form.
You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.
If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.
Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
The Form 1040X you need will not be available until mid-March.
I thought the 1040-x was only to amend returns that had already been accepted? When it becomes available do I just put the information from my other w-2 on it?

Please see IRS forms availability table for TurboTax individual (personal) tax products to check when Form 1040-X to amend returns will be available.
As xmasbaby0 mentioned please wait until your refund or payment is processed before starting your amendment to add the additional W-2. Please be aware that you can e-file your 2021 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail. Please see How to amend a tax return for instructions (this will be updated once the 2021 Form 1040-X is ready).
Okay I understand now.
This is the first time I've ever not filed them all together. I legitimately forgot I worked briefly at a job from January to April last year.
