Is the bill from the IRS the same amount as what you owed?
Do you have proof of payment to the IRS, such as a cancelled check, debit showing on your bank account for the amount paid or debit showing on your credit card account for the amount paid?
Is it a lot? It could be for a penalty. Did you have an underpayment penalty on 1040 line 38? It's very common and normal and expected for the IRS or state to bill you for more or send you a refund. You should bd getting a letter saying what the changed.
Generally, most taxpayers will avoid this penalty if they owe less than $1,000 in tax after subtracting their withholdings and credits, or if they paid at least 90% of the tax for the current year, or 100% of the tax shown on the return for the prior year, whichever is smaller.
I filed my taxes and submitted payment to IRS on 4/12. I have proof of payment of $101 to the US Treasury on my mom's credit card statement. Transaction details on the credit card statement reads "VPS Service Fee Intuit" with description reading " US Treasury Tax Payment" in the amount of $101. However, I received a notice today in the mail from the IRS stating I still owe the $101. I'm 18 and this was the first time I've ever had to pay income tax so my mom paid it for me using her credit card. It was from the sell of my FFA project so I received a 1099. Not sure if any of that matters but, like I said, this is all new to me.
@ryla516189 Since you have proof of payment you will need to contact the IRS and speak to agent to get this matter resolved.
Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 3 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.
