IRS letter says they found an error & gave 5 possible reasons why I OWE $493.92 instead of RECEIVING $907.00. Had nothing to do with stimulus. They seem to think I was declaring a dependent which isn't true. Or, my income is over$75,000, which is hilarious. Or, that the amount I'm getting back was computed incorrectly.
@kfearning Sounds like they are questioning the Child Tax Credit.
The difference is 1400. For the 3rd Stimulus payment. That is the list of generic reasons they give if they changed the Recovery rebate credit on line 30. How much is on 1040 line 30?
Did you not get the 3rd Stimulus payment? Or qualify for more? Line 30 is only if you didn't get the full amount or qualify for more. The IRS shows they already sent it to you.
Double check your bank statements and Check your IRS account (both accounts if married)

If the IRS thinks they sent it to you but you didn't get it request a trace for a missing third Stimulus payment
I got an mail from IRS saying: We found an error on your form 1040, which affects the following area of your return: Recovery Rebate Credit We changed your return to correct this error. As a result, you owe $555.61
Did you not get the 3rd Stimulus payment? Or qualify for more? LOOK at your form 1040 Line 30 ...it is ONLY if you didn't get the full amount or qualify for more. The IRS shows they already sent it to you so they changed your return. There is nothing you can do about the balance due ... pay it ASAP.
Then ... Double check your bank statements and Check your IRS account (both accounts if married) to see if you indeed did get the advance payment. You get either the advance or the credit but not both.

on EIC, I do not have a qualifying child and I got audited
2021 I do not have child to get EIC and I got audited
You don't need a child to get the EIC. You no longer have to be under 65 to get the EIC if you have no children. Just over 19.
@VolvoGirl - note that changes to the age limits for EITC are for 2021 only; in 2022 it goes back to the pre 2021 rules
Received a statement from the IRS. We found an error on your 2021 Form 104OSR. We changed your return to correct this error. As a result, you don't owe us, and we don't owe you a refund.
@donnafreelander1 - need more details - it is only a TT mistake if it is a calculation error, if it is an INPUT error (i..e something the user entered), then TT will not cover that
1) what did the IRS say they changed? how much was the adjustment?
2) if it related to the Recovery Rebate CRedit (line 30) or the Advance Tax credit (line 28), what did you have on those two line items
please post and I can help you our further to determine how the error occured.
Concerning my 2020 tax return. I received a letter from the IRS, Form CP2000. It says I owe over $13,000 in back taxes. It showed at least 8 entries with $0 on the return. This is not true.
I looked at my .pdf copy of my 2020 taxes. The entries concerned do not zero dollars. They show what TurboTax had calculated for me. I'm a long time customer of TurboTax. I never had this happen before. Please help me.
Don DeGregori
For that kind of taxes due there must be quite a bit of income that was not reported on the original return ... review the CP2000 carefully ... if you do not agree with the IRS then follow the instructions to refute the changes.

I filed my return through TurboTax for the 9 year and never have had problems before. This year on line 12b there was an entry of $167,533, I filed the return without catching it. I later realized that this was an error and filed an Amended return showing that I was to get a refund from IRS of $783. Now Turbo listed on REFUND 34 that I over paid by $783.00 . TurboTax listed that I did not want a refund. Now can I add this $783 to my credits of payments for next year ?
Turbo tax figured my refund to be 7,600 but I received a letter from IRS saying it was incorrect and I owe over $700 ! Why??
