Using Turbotax (first time) for Amended Return

Hi, I’ve always filed by mail but want to use turbotax for TY2022. I also need to file amended for TY2021. If I purchase Turbotax for TY2022, can I use the same purchase to amend TY2021? Or will I have to buy two separate products and pay twice? Thanks

You will have to buy two separate products; one for the 2021 tax year and another for the 2022 tax year.

Using Turbotax (first time) for Amended Return

You say that you want to use TurboTax and amend 2021---but you have not said whether you used TurboTax to file your original 2021 return.   You only say that you filed 2021 by mail.    Did you prepare 2021 using TT software?   If not, then you need to purchase and use the 2021 desktop software to create an exact duplicate of your 2021 return in order to amend using TT.  (And....you need 2022 software to prepare a 2022 return.   The software for 2022 will not be available until sometime in November of 2022.

CAN I USE TURBOTAX TO AMEND IF THE RETURN WAS PREPARED SOMEWHERE ELSE?

If you did not use TurboTax to prepare your tax return, it is possible to amend the return using TurboTax but it will really be a pain.  It would be better to use the software or service used to file originally.  If a paid preparer made a mistake on your tax return, that tax preparer should do the amended return for you at no charge.

In order to use TurboTax to amend your return, you need to purchase the desktop software for the tax year and re-create the return EXACTLY as it appeared when it was filed with the IRS/states.  Every line has to be the same.  Then you have to "trick" the software into thinking you filed by saying you will mail the return. (but do not mail it)   AFTER that, you use the software to prepare a Form 1040X, which has to be printed, signed and mailed to the IRS.  It takes the IRS about 9  months  or more to process an amended return

@Shana113 Tax refunds from an amended tax return are only mailed as a check from the IRS to the address on the amended tax return.

Amended tax returns are taking from 6 to 9 months or longer to be processed by the IRS.
